I have an almost new Savage Axis .270 with a Vortex Diamondback 4-12 x 40. The recoil is a bit too sharp for me so I am looking to trade it for something with less recoil for my sissy shoulder. I just want a lightweight deer rifle. I have two offers so far. A straight gun trade, no scopes, for a mossberg 4x4 in 7mm-08, and my gun/scope for a bnib winchester xrp with a vortex crossfire2 in .243.
I haven't shot either of these calibers. Do they sound like a fair trade? Would either do for a lighter deer rifle with less recoil than the .270?

Does deer = whitetail? Or mulies? Or both?
I am a huge fan of the 243. Don’t take this the wrong way, but I started my teen son out with a 243 and he’s 21 now and still hunts with that caliber.
It would definitely soften the recoil and be plenty of fun for whitetails and mulies unless your shooting longer distance for them. Even then, if you hit where you aim, it would be effective. Plenty use the 243 for elk.

I would opt for the 243 + crossfire scope trade option.

Good luck

That's what I was leaning towards. I have a 30-06 if I know I'll be shooting further and at at bigger game. Thanks for your opinion.

Do you reload? In the 270 I load the 110 gr Barnes for the smaller shooters i have taken out. If not Hornady makes a 120 Gr custom lite that runs 2675 fps in 270 that would be pretty easy shooting.

So the 270 has too much recoil but your 30-06 is fine from a recoil perspective?

If you want to look at keeping your 270, then put a Limbsaver on it. They typically do a good job at reducing felt recoil.

If you want to trade, then I'd go with the 7mm-08. Recoil is not much more than a 243 but gives you plenty of options from a hunting perspective.

IMO, the .284 bullet in the 7-08 offers a broad range of weights for your choice of game.

recoil is pretty subjective. for me, the 30-06 in same weight projectile (150) and the 270win don't recoil the same. the 30-06 is an abusive shove where as the 270 is sharp but mild. even my 270 wsm is less recoil than the 30-06. the 6.5cm is a very mild cartridge that would suit your needs but you'd need to find one to fit your trade. you might consider pulling your scope off and trading the bare rifle for what you want.

243 and 30-06 is a good duo. Throw in a 223 and you have the trifecta.

I bought my son a savage axis youth model in 7mm-08 and worked up a light recoil load with 140g accubonds and 38 grains of varget, muzzle velocity is around 2500 fps. He is about 5ft and weighs 80lbs and he has never complained about the recoil. He has killed an oryx from 334yds and a cow elk from 320 and both were one shot kills. If it was me I would go with the 7-08 and be comfortable shooting whitetails and up to elk size game.

Have you tried the reduce recoil ammo?

The factory recoil pad is not very good. Limbsavers or Decelerators make a world of difference and cost a lot less than a new rifle. Of course, everyone needs a new rifle so......

Bought a 243 for my son 15 years ago and it's still his go to deer rifle! I actually take it out occasionally when I don't feel like shooting my 30 06 or 300 win mag!!!!

recoil is a math equation, nothing more. You can compare different cartridges here:
All 9# rifles using velo from federal premium ammo:
270 140gr @2950= 16.68 foot #'s recoil
7-08 140gr @2800= 15.68 foot #'s recoil
243 95gr @ 3030= 8.39 foot #'s recoil

There’s that, then there’s stock materials. 270 M70 in Tupperware isn’t nearly as comfy as a Kimber Montana in Kevlar, even with the weight advantage. Kinda wild actually.

Yup it's weird, I know. My 30-06 is heavier and it has a good recoil pad so it's not as bad. But like I said, the .270 is just a sharper recoil than what I'd like.

I did look these numbers up and I ended up going with the 243 cause the 7-08 wasn't much less recoil than the 270. And I still have the 30-06 for big stuff.
