the gold ring is made in the US, probably better quality. It’s also more compact. What are your thoughts?

I'd say leaupold, I had a vortex viper (step above diamondback) and it sucked. You should be able to try them at a store outside in the parking lot and see. In my opinion, until you spend $1000+ on a spotter, a decent pair of binos is better than a cheap heavy spotter. I could never use that vortex clearly over 15x, kinda made it useless to me

Yeah it will be a couple years before I can drop big money on glass. In the meantime I’m looking for something that can clearly see antlers at 500 and that I can hand hold on low power if I need to.

I've never found a spotter i liked to hand hold. at 500 I feel pretty good with 10x binos personally

Find some used 15x binos. Kaibabs, minox, maybe meopta if you can bump the budget a little. You’ll be way better off than a cheap spotter

Personal opinion here... I got the 11-33x50mm Razor. And I wish I'd have gotten something with more magnification. (I was afraid of the extra weight). Because realistically anything about like somewhere in the vicinity of maybe 24x or so and the images sharpness really starts to go downhill from that point upward in the magnification range, looking at things at the distances away you bought a spotter for.

Before even considering a spotter, I'd seriously recommend trying to glass thru some 15x binos on a tripod first. I found I prefer that much more to gridding that hillside with a spotter. It's tons faster.

And to further give you some data to think about, I now prefer looking thru the primo grade 10x binos on a tripod, rather than the mid-grade 15's I happen to have. Now not really much of an extra benefit being given to me by the slightly lower grade 15's, since my eyes and brain soo much more enjoy the sharper, clearer image those used top-notch 10's are giving me.

But yeah, if you're set on a spotter, I'd recommend 65mm and 45x as a realistic minimum, if you really want to enjoy them longterm. My $.02

I think that Vortex makes good stuff in the high end of their product lines. I have had very good experiences with them and I will undoubtedly purchase more. In the mid to lower end, I don't find their products to stand out radically over competitors' products. You get what you pay for, and I agree with others that it is very hard to get a good quality spotting scope under $1000, and that you may be better off with available binocular options in your price range. Although I am far from a Leupold fanboy, out of the two specific products you posted, I'd go with the GR over the Diamondback every time.
