The trip is archery elk in the Holy Cross Wilderness, Sept. 12-20. Sleeping bag is a Sierra Designs Ridge Runner +15°.

Pad Option 1: Klymit Inertia X Wave Recon (48" x 25" x 1.5")
Weight: 11.5oz
Packed size: 3" x 7"

Pad Option 2: Therm-a-Rest Women's ProLite Plus (66" x 20" x 1.5") [bought it for the gf]
Weight: 20.0 oz
Packed size: 4.8" x 11"

I keep going back and forth and can't make up my mind. The Klymit is so much smaller and lighter. It's awesome for 3 season stuff. But if the weather gets gnarly, snowy, and below freezing, I know the Therm-a-Rest would be more comfortable. But for all I know, it might be 50 degrees every night in September too.

What's a good night's sleep worth to ya? A thicker pad is always more comfortable, Me? I carry a 28oz EXPED long/wide that's 3.5" thick. Why? Cuz a good night's sleep is EVERYTHING to me. You already made up your mind ya know? It's an 8 day trip!

I'm with Bruce on this one. I'm also packing a exped heavier but rest so much better. Throw that shorty on the floor and sleep on it tonight see how you feel in morning

A pad isn't where I would drop weight per say, get a good option that fits you well and then get the lightest version you can afford that is at least 2.5" thick. My buddy tried a klymit last year, this year he will be using a therm-a-rest neoair xlite. I sold my xlite and changed to an exped synmat sl9 which is a tad bigger and heavier.

I've been sleeping on the 3/4 Klymit for the past week. I'm moving to a new house but haven't moved the bed yet. Tonight I'll try the Therm-a-rest.

For what it's worth, last year I slept on a 3/4 length closed cell foam pad for 1st rifle. We got 8 inches of snow. Didn't sleep great, but there were other issues like condensation that made a bigger difference than slightly sore hips. I've never slept on a "warm" pad before in cold weather. So I really don't know what I would be missing out on yet. At some point I may upgrade to the NeoAir XTherm or Xlite but not this year.

Based on the responses so far though I'm starting to lean towards the extra warmth/comfort of the R4.2 Thermarest vs the R = ??? of the Klymit.

Which ever is more comfortable and warmer, if it's slightly heavier it's worth the trade off or 8 oz....
