Which Bivy?

Hello Rokslider's
I am looking into the use of a bivy sack and tarp instead of a traditional backpacking tent this year in Arizona. I am looking for something that is slightly longer due to my height being 6 foot 2 inches. I am also hoping for a hooped bivy because I am not a huge fan of the idea of the bivy sitting directly on my face. I am hoping for good durability and also breathable seeing as Arizona in Spanish means its hot as hell. I really appreciate all of the advice if you are willing to share. Thank you all and good luck on your hunts this year!

What tarp are you going to be using? Some tarps have inner bivies/ nests that integrate really well.

+1 for Borah. Email them about your use and your height / weight and they will guide you to the right answer.

Tarps are a bit of a decision. For solo you could do a light cube 6x9 for 6oz and $$$. You could get the same size in silnylon for 1/3 the cost but 2x the weight. Another option is to go a bit bigger like a seek outside DST which is 10x10 and a good bit heavier. Depending on where or when you hunt Arizona you May need more sun shade than rain cover.

a bug bivy pictured above gives you a ground cloth and protection from bugs; if your tarp is large enough to negate any need for splash protection, it's the way to go

if not, something along the lines of MLD's Superlight bivy would be better- waterproof bottom, water resistant top, head netting for bugs- the top is breathable (obviously not as breathable as full mesh :)), but gives you protection from splash when using a smaller tarp

Check out Enlightened Equipment Recon Bivy. Not sure what the wait times are but comes in long. I'm 6'6" and it is a tight fit but have spent ~30 nights in it. Toss in a small tarp and it's a nice 12-14oz shelter option for ~$250.

Another vote for a Borah bivy! I use the side zip bivy under my Mountainsmith shelter and it works great. Amazing customer service and it only weighs 6.5oz in its carry sack

How do you find that Bivy? Is it pretty tight or do you feel like there is no room to move while sleeping?

I got the regular length and wide width version to make sure i have enough room to move around. it is plenty roomy. i toss and turn a lot while sleeping and have no issues with it.

its the ultralight side zip bivy that i have

Is there an advantage to getting the chest zip? I’m probably gonna to get one of these but a little confused as to the difference of n the two zipper styles.

The side zip bivy opens up on the same side as my sleeping bag. I use a tarp shelter and didnt want to be climbing in through the chest area. Side zip makes for easier entry for me.
