Building my daughter a Mauser rifle in 7X57. What barrel do you guys recommend and why? Thinking of a 22" Lilja.

Shaw for a budget, but good, option. I've installed several of theirs when cost was a concern, and all have been good shooters.

I use Douglas the most often, and they have all been good barrels. I also like what I've gotten from McGowen the last couple of years. They'll do oddball contours without batting an eye and the finish is nice.

Nothing wrong with Lilja, Hart, Bartlein, Krieger, Lothar Walther, Proof, and several others I can't recall immediately. The only barrels I've had issues with were factory barrels that people wanted repurposed. Usually they string, and need to be stress relieved.

22” is about the perfect length for a 7x57

All barrel makers seem to turn out quality products. A ham fisted chamber, thread and crown job is more often to blame for poor accuracy.

To me a Mauser screams hart, Douglas or shilen.

Mc Gowan has a good product for a great price and benchmark, Broughton and rock all deserve mentioned too.

Thanks for the help. Looks like I just need to true the action and picked a barrel. What muzzle break should I put on it?

For looks, I would go with something slender like a Gentry or Vias. You're not mitigating a lot of recoil.

I will check out the Gentry and Vias muzzle brakes. The rifle is for my daughter and she is on the smaller side so I want make it as pleasant as possible to shoot. She loves shooting and want to keep her hooked on it.

If you are looking to reduce recoil, does it have to be 7x57? Brownells sells short chambered mauser barrels for like $90 that are excellent in my experience. I think they are shaw. They have em in 6.5x55 and 25-06, which will both be lighter kicking in your rifle than 7Mauser

I just did a large ring with a Wilson from Ragged Hole. Very happy. Mausers are fairly straight forward, at least the large ring (my one and only Mauser barreling experience). Mine is a commercial Zastava and there was very little reason to true. The c-ring and action face were within a half a thou of each other. It shoots very well. This is rounds 2-7 out of a brand new barrel. 35 Whelen.

It doesn't have to be but want a oddball cartridge. I might go with a 275 Rigby also. 😆

I haven't heard of them. I will check them out. Nice looking rifle. What stock did you use?

What's that scope, if you don't mind my asking?
