2026 Turkey harvest pics

Harvested my first turkey on the farm my wife and I purchased last year. During the first week of the West Virginia season we took 5 birds. The youngest hunter was 8 years old and the oldest was 71 years old. 4 of the 5 were first timers and this was my fourth bird. Used Federal TSS in 20GA and harvested at 26 yards. Call was a plane jane WoodHaven mouth call.

Last night I decided I was going to get up early this morning and drive a few hours to my spot. The birds were scattered and quiet but I managed to finally get a gobbler to answer. I kept hitting him with clucks and cackles and he finally committed. Once he did, he came in fast.

Our California season ended on a high note for me. Got out with my son the day before it ended and we had a great morning with lots of action but didn’t shoot anything.

Then on the last day I was asked by a friend to take his 9 year old grandson out for his first hunt. We would be hunting on grandpa’s farm. Grandson shows up in blue jeans and white socks! Got him settled in under a tree that had a big milkweed growing in front of it, big enough that when out front you couldn’t see his jeans or socks. Conditions were tough, cold, overcast & windy. Finally around 10:30 it cleared off and we had some birds in range. The kid made a great, long shot on his first turkey. Grandpa got to see how effective TSS is, as the bird was at 40+ yards and this kid was shooting a 20 guage. Didn’t matter, the bird went down like he was hit by Thor’s hammer, never even flopped. I just wish he’d have shot the bird I was trying to get him to shoot as it was a big, old long beard. The kid was ecstatic with his Jake and so was grandpa.

I filled my final tag this morning on a drizzly hunt before work. I had 5 toms come in off the roost and beat up my breeder hen decoy. Never even acknowledged the 1/2 strut Jake decoy right behind her. Anyway, I finally killed an Oregon Rio with some hooks!

There’s not much worse than photos of a soggy turkey so sorry about the poor photo quality.

22 pounds, 10 1/8” beard and 1 1/4” spurs.

Started taking my sons with me when they were barely walking. Now they're 19 and moved off to S. Texas for college. One is working as a guide/ranch hand and invited me to come hunt with him.
I've been fortunate and have shot quite a few turkeys in different states, but this tops them all.
From them tagging along with me in the woods until now being guided by one of them, and just having this come full circle is awesome.
