Guys,

Looking to get a lighter weight bag this year to backpack with in the fall. I know there are a lot of great options out there but I am limited to what I can get with my Cabelas Bucks. I am looking at TNF Furnace 5 deg or the Kelty Cosmic Down 0 deg. Both appear to be extremely similar in features (weight, compression sack size). I did see something that I wasn't sure would make a ton of difference. TNF says theirs is filled with goose down and the Kelty is filled with duck down. Not sure if that is accurate or if it even matters. Also, I saw the Kelty has the En rating but couldn't find the same for TNF. Again, not sure that matters.

What say you Roksliders? What would you buy or have had good/bad experience.

Thanks,

Just one opinion here, but after lugging a 4lb 0 degree TNF bag around so I could be warm in the teens, I finally saved my coin enough to buy a Western Mountaineering 15 degree bag. It weighs half as much, compresses to about half the size, and is actually warm to the temp rating and lower if I layer up. I wish I had done it at the start, it works so much better!

Probably not an option if Cabelas points are the currency at hand however.

I have the Kelty Cosmic duck down 0F. I got the previous model on closeout. The version I have is warm, heavy (I think just shy of 5lbs), and doesn't compress all that well. I've not had it to less than 15F, but I was warm enough and just slept in my baselayers. It's a decent enough bag, but I would rather have something else for when it's real cold. I use a quilt most other times.

I will echo what is said above. Lugging either bag around will not be fun. Cabelas sells some of the Marmot bags. More money but worth it in my opinion.

I'm guessing you guys would laugh to find out that this would be a huge upgrade over what I currently use. Last time I packed in I was carrying a 9+ pound camp bag. Hell, I didn't even know any better. This website has really opened my eyes to what is out there. At any rate, I know there are lots of better options than those two but it is what is in the budget for this year. I still want to upgrade by pack and the cash I have will be thrown at that purchase this season. I normally wouldn't look to a 0 deg option but from everything I read I am not going to get quite the same comfort level with the cheaper bags as you would with the higher end gear.
