Hey kid, I know you didn’t know. I’ve explained this to countless others before. What you just did was the equivalent of walking into a nice fancy cocktail party, grabbing the microphone, and asking all the women what color their underwear they had on.

There are elk in every single OTC unit. That’s why they are OTC. Just pick one and go. I promise that “picking the right spot” will not be what makes the difference in having a successful hunt or not. I know it seems like that way now, but it will make more sense on the other side. Just decide on a unit and go. Bike your asses off. You’ll Find 2 dozen drainages that don’t have elk but sooner or later youll stumble into some if you hunt hard enough. Then next year when someone posts the same question you did you can decide for yourself if you want to tell them (on an open forum) which drainage to hunt or not…

Ok so my dad and I with some of our friends are planning a OTC drop camp hunt for the 2023 season and I’m looking for good places to go that some of y’all have been to or recommend. I’ve been told about some places on other sites and some people told me some places to stay clear of. Just trying to get some info some folks that may spend more time doing the same thing. I greatly appreciate you all in advance.

To the OP, what camo do you guys run? Mossy Oak or Real Tree?

I’d find a unit to hunt that has the kind of foliage that most closely matches whatever camo you have the most of. *OnX has a layer you can use to find those areas.

Also, not sure what other forums you’ve been on, but PM a guy named BuzzH if you run across him… He’s not on here anymore, but I‘m sure he‘d point you in the right direction,

No one wants another hunter (or group of hunters) stirring up the area they go to. Even if they never planned on going back to that area again, it would be a richard move to post that spot on the www because it negatively affects anyone else who still hunts that area

Co CPW is always looking for more donations come on down success rates vary from 5-12ish percents. I kind of wonder why though? As was mentioned by someone else, best advice for you would be to discover which states offer OTC elk hunts and then contact the game departments that are there, and then start contacting outfitters based on the information you received from the game departments. That's your absolute best course of action, bar none.

I'd give anything to have another hunt with my dad, so for that reason I deleted the post your question deserves. Try searching elk hunting on YouTube, you'll learn enough there to ask better questions here.

My dad isn’t a young spring chicken anymore and this is something he has always wanted to do. So now that I can go with him because my work is a lot easier for me to take off as long as I want and when I want I figure now is the possible only chance to take dad out there. @BDRam16 I get where you’re coming from but also like I said, I’m not asking to join your camp or location. I see how some of us get frustrated when people ask the questions I did but also this hunt is more so for my dad, not me. I’m trying to soak up every opportunity to hunt or fish with him while I still have him here to share the memories with and if that’s hard to understand then I’m sorry.

Virtually all the western states offer drop camp hunting opportunities. Pick one and then contact the game department in that state and the outfitters within that state. You'll learn more by doing that, than being mischevious and totally off-base and somewhat illogical on internet hunting forums.

The issue isn’t that you asked a question as a newbie. People told you right away that it was going to go south. The issue is your follow up responses. You don’t join a forum with thousands of members who have been here for YEARS and then start calling them names when you were told your question wouldn’t go well.

This page is google searchable. If someone on here said “Unit X in State Y is the place to go.” Every single time someone googles “where to hunt” that would pop up on the top of the google response list. Congratulations, that spot is ruined. You didn’t know any better, it happens. Next time, when someone goes “hey this isn’t what you should be asking” try not insulting them on your first day.

All the OTC units have elk and hunters. Look at the cpw statistics website to determine how much of each.
Then escout those units to see if it's the kind of terrain you want to hunt; ie pinion juniper or heavily timbered areas.
Get in as good of shape as possible and do the best with tools like elk101, the elk collective and podcasts
