What's your three layers for November hunting?

Year round, OR sun hoodie or Sitka core lightweight, ambient 75, arctyrex atom lt. also really loving the jet stream right now….

Base Layer: First Lite Wick
Mid - First Lite Kiln, but probably need to get something a little heavier.
Eddie Bauer Puffy

Sitka Core base layer. Light or heavy, depending on the forecast.
Sitka Ambient mid.
Sitka Timberline or Jetstream outer.
Down puffy in the backpack.

Always a lw baselayer, generally prefer synthetic if moving much
Always some weather-resistant outer layer, either a breatheable softshell jacket for day hunts or a hardshell that doubles as rain gear if backpacking.
Always a down puffy jacket.
(And always a beanie)

Midlayer and puffy I have options depending on temps.

If temps are going to be below 30 I usually start with an Icebreaker 260 base and then add the Peloton 240 as my mid layer when/if needed. Once I stop moving to glass I throw on a Pro down hooded jacket over top. I strongly dislike being cold so I usually pack a Pro 200 merino hoody as well to use as a second mid layer just in case.

Hooded merino base- la sportiva
Mid weight fleece- Outdoor Research
Mid size synthetic down-Simms

If it is really cold I have an extra heavy down jacket or a vest. If I have a big morning hike I will usually bring an extra base layer to swap out.

What conditions would make you change from one piece to the other? I currently have the Ambient 100 hooded jacket and was thinking of using it as my midlayer over a SG merino base layer shirt. I thought about the Sitka heavy weight hoody but wasn't sure how much better than the ambient 100 jacket it was?
Honestly, it’s just situational. Something as simple as if I thought I’d be busting brush without anything over the top of it, I’d lean towards the HW hoodie. It “feels” a little more durable and it’s half the price. That’s why I also tend to wear the HW hoodie more guiding. It just feels like it can maybe take a little more day in, day out abuse and it does the job well enough.

If temps made me think that’s a layer I’d be taking on and off frequently, the full zip on the ambient is easier, especially over a merino base layer. I hate the static cling from pulling the fleece over merino. If I knew it was going to be wet, I’d go ambient because it’s much easier to wear dry. It sounds obvious but it’s just more of a high performance piece. Think commuter car versus sports car. The ambient is better at almost everything but I’m more selective when I use it.

Next to skin: Brynje Thermo-Wool mesh w/ inlay
Base/bonus layer: Sitka Core LW Hoody
Mid/active insulation: Sitka Ambient 100 or UL 65 (temp dependent)
Puffy: SG Grumman

Id round it out with a Sitka MTN EVO if i could... but now were talking about 5 layers haha.

Base- 250 merino
Mid - FL sawtooth
Outer- thinking I may pair up a FL uncompahgre vest with a Sitka Jetstream

First lite Aerowool base (or Patagonia silk weight)
Kuiu 240 Peleton
Kifaru Lost Park (or Arcteryx Atom if not too cold)

Kuiu 120 merino or first lite kiln depending on temps
Kuiu Gila Short sleeve (it helps with movement between merino and Peloton)
Kuiu Peloton 97 or Pro Merino 200 zip depending on temps
Peloton 240 hoodie or SG M7 depending on rain or high wind
BD access down hooded jacket in the pack for when glassing.
