What's your three layers for November hunting?

I wear this most every day into Dec and Jan for hunting.
150 merino Black Ovis base or kings 150 merino quarter zip
Kuiu kiln which is a 250 merino
Sitka Jetstream jacket.
I have loved this combo for warmer afternoons and cold days.

Kuiu Merino 120 Long Sleeve or Nike Pro Combat Hyperwarm Long Sleeve.

Sitka Core Heavyweight Hoodie or Ambient 100 Jacket.

SG Grumman.

Probably would also have a Sitka Aerolite Vest either with or on me..

Depending on the temperature and moisture.
Merino base layer, Brynie or other lightweight merino wool or lightweight synthetic like Peloton 118.
Mid-weight merino or Kuiu Peloton 200.
Wool button-up shirt or Kuiu Peloton 200 or Kuiu Puffy.

Well tough to do in just 3 layers Idaho or Montana in November.

Short Sleeve KUIU peloton 118
KUIU peloton 97
KUIU snap shirt (40 grams 3DeFx) blocks wind very well and adjusts to your activity well.

Those wouldn’t be my most adaptable system choices but the 3 with a rain jacket I would have a chance to make it with. Really need a 7-10 oz fill down puffy.

What I would actually take
Short Sleeve KUIU peloton 118
KUIU peloton 97
KUIU snap shirt
SG Grumman jacket
Rain Jacket if warmer projected, axis if cold and nasty projected

I often wear synthetic short sleeve, peloton 97 and peloton 240.

Kuiu - merino LS zip neck no hood
Kuiu - Stongfleece 280?
Kuiu - Axis and/or SG Grunman/Mountain Hardware 3layer Gortex hard shell

Kuiu - Axis pants with BlackOvis puff pants

In Colorado, if it's cold...
Fl aerowool t
Fl asrowool hoody

Usually that's it when going up

Outdoor vital ventus

Marmot guides down hoody

Most likely less than optimal. I’m a dummy when it comes to cold weather prep, and haven’t hunted north of central UT or CO yet.

-Long sleeve merino base layer: wool weight dependent on temp range
-Long sleeve quarter or full zip grid fleece
-Jacket: usually a Dalibor for warmer hunts or a Vellus for colder hunts

I like my base layer and shirt to have a hood. I usually don’t wear the hood, just let it pile up on my neck to keep things a little warmer.

T-shirt in the pack. By lunch I’m usually in just the base layer and t-shirt. On a cold day maybe I’ve just shed the jacket by then. I’m one of those hobos that mixes and matches brands erratically.

Personally, I have a tough time pulling off a 3 layer system in a Montana winter. Even not backpacking. I do really lightweight base/mid but more layers. I find i cover more conditions this way.

Sitka 120
Kuiu 97
Sitka Ambient
Decathlon Synthetic Puffy

  1. Usually a merino base from icebreaker, which weight depends on forecast.
  2. Generally a Patagonia R1 fleece
  3. Sometimes a puffy, or maybe now swapping in an atlantic rancher sweater though only if its really on the colder side. Puffy might be a cotopaxi fuego or the sitka vest.
  4. Sitka jetstream outer layer

Base layer merino layer by ibex, first lite, smart wool
Powder Hoody by Duckwoth
Super down pro kuiu or helio down jacket by feathered friends.

Base: stone glacier hoody
Mid: condor half zip grid fleece
Outer: Mostly an OR shell jacket since it's usually rain not snow that I'm dealing with, but if warmth is needed a light Patagonia synthetic puffy

Sitka Core Heavyweight Hoodie or Ambient 100 Jacket.
What conditions would make you change from one piece to the other? I currently have the Ambient 100 hooded jacket and was thinking of using it as my midlayer over a SG merino base layer shirt. I thought about the Sitka heavy weight hoody but wasn't sure how much better than the ambient 100 jacket it was?

- Merino 120 (t-shirt)
- Kuiu Peloton 97 (hooded)
- Puffy vest or jacket
- Hard or soft shell over that depending on how hard the terrain is or whether it’s raining
