^ how many rounds does the magazine hold? the blind magazine? for a 1/2 oz I wouldn't lose several rds of capacity

barrel fluting on a 16" barrel is probably only 2-3 oz tops

can't go any lighter on the scope or bases :D
This one holds 5+1 the blind mag would hold 3+1. I really don’t care about the weight savings as much as I just dislike the janky bottom plastic and it gets in the way of holding it at the balance point. Fluting the bolt, barrel, and machining the action would just be for the fun of trimming weight but I probably won’t bother.

I wish our Kimber Hunter magazines had a 5 round option. The three round mag is perfectly flush, but would be nice for a larger capacity mag too.

Here’s my latest entry.

Howa Mini 6.5 grendel cut to 16”: 3lbs 10.4 to 3lbs 4.6oz
Bottom plastic: 1.9oz
Magazine: 1.5oz
Leupold fx-ii fixed 2.5x: 6.5oz
Talley LW lows: 2.2oz
Stocky CF stock, some holes drilled (not worth it) buttpad replaced with foam, sling studs removed: 18.9oz modified to 15.8

Total weight is 5lbs 1.7oz give or take
——— not including ammo ———

Plan to replace magazine with a blind mag bottom metal -0.5oz
Actions screws swap to titanium 😂 -0.25?
Flute Bolt -1oz?
Possibly flute barrel and mill down the action but these probably aren’t worth fooling with -5oz?
Wish I could find a super skeletonized bolt handle
If anyone else has ideas I’m all ears.

Weatherby Backcountry Ti 2.0 .308 22" Steel barrel. Talley scope mounts, Leupold VX-2 3-9x33 Ultralight
5 lbs 6 ounces scoped plus have to add for the rounds. I have no need for an ultralight but it is a very nice rifle. The Titanium version with the long action 6.5 Weatherby RPM is only a few ounces heavier.

That’s damn light, but I don’t understand why you’d have no need for an UL rifle? Unless you’re just road hunting, etc.

If that was me I'd have a 15lb 26in barrel + suppressor chassis gun.
I've brought a 18+ pound AI AT with 24" barrel + a 10" suppressor on a deer hunt like that before just because I could. A heavy gun + a Gamechanger bag on the stand's rail is awesome for long stationary sitting shots.

I’m a big fan of the 8-10lb guns depending on caliber. My first rifle and the one I’ve hunting with for many many years is a Remington model 7 in 308 with a Leupold VX2 3-9. I believe is 6.5lbs and it’s a lively little thing to shoot.

Latest build is a 280ai right at 10lbs. In the future I’ll probably get a lighter stock to get it in the 8.5ish range and thread the muzzle.

Tikka T3X Superlite in 6.5CM
Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40
Talley Low Mounts
Cheapo light sling

7.5# with a full magazine. Nothing fancy, but I'm not much over $1000 for the whole package (bought the rifle on sale recently and picked up the scope on sale when it was much cheaper).

It is going on a diet this year but my Weatherby 307 in 7 PRC weighed 10lb 4 oz loaded with the bipod suppressor and scope.

My lightest is a Seekins Element 6.5 PRC with NF NX8 2.5-20 F1. Without bipod, is about 8# with loaded mag.

IMG_4883.jpeg

It’s a bit different than my 17 lb 338 RUM with 30” barrel, Gen 3 Razor, Ckyepod, and TBAC 338 Ultra.

What's your preferred way of lugging around the RUM? When I briefly had a 19 pound AI AT I used a biathlon sling for just carrying it when I didn't have a backpack on.

Great question!

I primarily just packed it over my shoulder and would alternate sides when I’d start to notice getting a little sore. Given the barrel length, strapping to my pack made me seem like a flagpole haha. I don’t hunt a lot of thick areas with it, but that did make it a little more challenging getting through brush, hence just carrying it was more simple.

IMO, balance, efficiency, and diminishing returns are things to keep in mind. My T3X .280 ai with a Leupold 3-9 and Talleys weighed right under 7.5 pounds…and I personally wouldn’t want it any lighter due to recoil! I’m a small guy 5’8” and 150# so that certainly should be factored but I can’t see the point of a lighter gun or heavier cartridge at that weight.

In fact, I’ve since added bottom metal, an Arca+pic rail, leather cheek riser/ammo holder, a barrel harmonics, and switched scopes to the Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 and I’m within an ounce or two of 8# and I like it. I can shoot that thing all day.

IMO, 7-9# is the sweet spot when married with the balanced cartridges in the .270 Win-30-06 realm(not Magnums but capable of decimating anything that breathes). Obviously, you can do whatever you want, it’s Murica; but I’m going to bet the consistency, accuracy, power, and platform that my one gun show achieves can pretty much do it all on any big game animal in this country inside of 500 yards.

In the weight savings department…I believe the race to the bottom really is too often the race to THE bottom.

I mean, 10#. Really?
