Last year on our first trip we ran into a couple guys who killed a nice bull and had brought some seasoning with them. We thought damn they were confident ha! They shared some with us, that meat in those mountains was amazing. So, we are 3 weeks away from leaving and I'm planning on a bringing a small onion and apple to dice up and put in a foil packet with some cut up backstrap to cook in the coals. Love doing just about any meat that way. Curious as to what others like to do? Just sharpen a pointy stick and stick it over the fire? Bring oil and butter? Take a bite right off the animal as you clean it? haha

I'll carry a spice pack (just the McCormick's steak seasoning) and little vial of peanut oil. I want to spice and cook the steak over the fire on a stick and then fry the heart in the oil in my stove. Could also make calf fries that way, but skip the breading.

Skewer and roast heart over a fire. A little salt is nice but not necessary if you’re hungry and in the Backcountry.

Yeah I didn't think about the heart, may put some spices in an itty bitty bag to put on a heart. That sounds delicious.

Something from the animal...heart...tenderloins...over the fire...then drink a lot of whiskey and wakeup with a hangover...if hunting anywhere north of AZ/NM, jump in the freezing cold river the next morning, hangover cured and enjoy the fact that you just harvested an elk!

I keep a GSI spice rocket and small bottle oil in my pack at all times, hunting, fishing or just backpacking. Small game, mushrooms, wild greens, all kinds of good stuff to supplement the freeze dried grub. Plus if you do punch a tag your set up for a good field meal.

Kabobs: Pieces of Tenderloin, Heart, Liver and maybe tongue on a stick roasted over a fire. Salt and Pepper.
I think in the future I'd like to get all "Rinella" and drizzle some
marrow over the top of it all.

When I'm out for a week or more I crave fat and fresh vegetables. A buger or pizza, and a salad and I'm usually set.

Two years ago, my brother cleaned off a flat rock and cooked some back strap on it right by the fire. I live in a small town with no pizza places though so my first meal of the mountain is sausage and pepperoni pizza with breadsticks and buffalo wings

Salt and pepper on fresh tenderloins over a grill at our hunting shack.

Though at the end of a week of elk hunting, then helping a buddy pack out his moose, this breakfast was pretty killer.

Moose backstrap cooked over a fire, eggs and shredded potatoes.

I bring a Walla Walla sweet onion and a stick of butter along with a few pinches of salt and pepper. If I’m camping and not backpacking, I also bring a badass bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. Lately, Pine Ridge Stags Leap Vineyard has been making the trip.

I soak the liver overnight in cold fresh water then the next evening sauté the sliced onions in half the butter and the thin-sliced liver in the rest, add a bit of salt and pepper and serve with the Pine Ridge Cabernet in our Yeti Tumbler coffee mugs.

A flask of good Islay Scotch comes out after the meal and wine are gone, and due respect is given to the elk.

First town meal...

After coming out heavy this year took my two buddies to dinner Dominos. Tab was $75 for three dudes before tip.

My preferred first town meal is a greasy spoon / diner kinda meal. Breakfast at any time. Eggs, bacon, potatoes, coffee, and pie. Maybe a country fried steak. Corned hash.
