.338 win mag is still my favorite. I shot a deer last year at 150 yards that flopped over, and I could see little smoke curley Q's coming out of the entrance hole for a good 2-3 seconds immediately after. Just about the coolest thing ever. Pieces of lung and rib and blood all over the place behind where it had been standing. Doesn't make a meat jelly mess like smaller/faster rounds I've used in the past (.270, .30-06, 7 mag, etc).

I'm well aware that it's full blown Fudd logic. I hadn't been introduced to the modern smaller is better mantra when I got it. I use a .223 sometimes now. I keep breaking my plate hangers with the .338. It makes me giggle. I can't quit shooting stuff with it.

There is a distinct advantage to shooting what everyone else at camp shoots. As long as your friends have shells then you’ll never run out.
I have a 30-06 and now I want to build a custom in 30-06

I don’t know, the more I dive down rabbit holes of calibers/ cartridges that I am to the point where I think “KISS” just use the 30-06 and reload it to do what you want plus if you ever forget ammo or lose it or whatever… you can pick factory offerings up.

I use to have a mixture of larger game cartridges.

243, 25-06, 260, 7x57, 7mm08, 7mm rem mag, 300WM, 300wsm, multiple 308, 338WM, 375hh, 30/30, 45/70

Now I have
(1) 308
(1) 30-06
(1) 338 WM
(1) 30/30
(1) 45/70 and I feel great about the decision

I get to enjoy my rifles a lot more.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. It would be a very fun way to hunt stealthy areas. Unfortunately, where I hunt in the plains of Wyoming, even a supersonic .300 BLK has a trajectory like a rainbow.
Oh, it drops like a bad rock, scope can adjust for like 25 moa and its limited from 50 to 156 yards with this shell. This gives me a 165 to 175 yd max range. Its about as quiet as a crossbow.

I hunt alot of fields here in pa, 300 yard shots aren't uncommon so I understand your Wyoming hunting, and I'm not gonna take it for every whitetail hunt, but it's a nice tool to have

Generally a 6.5 or some flavor has been my favorite deer caliber. But anything thats on hand will suffice for me.

I like 6.5cm with hornady precision hunter ammo. It’s my only rifle but I researched a lot prior to buying a few heads ago. I’d do it again or just get a .308 for ammo availability. There were times during Covid when local shops had no 6.5cm for months but had 5-10 different bullets in stock for .308.

I have a bunch I use for deer and it varies by situation and what glass I’ll need for the area I’m hunting. If I’m in Ohio (or any straightwall state) it’s the 450 bush. I also use a 6.5 man bun, 300wsm, 30/06, 270, and 7mm rem. 90% of the time I’m using my 7mm rem mag. It’s a laser beam and shoots flat with not much drop, and it hits like a freight train… especially on shots over 300 yards (they typically drop).

Howdy, my favorite caliber is anything .264 . For close to 40 years my favorite was 264Wm. still right there with the 6.5-300Weatherby. I smile every time I shoot either one or any of them. If I want to put a smile on my face or as you put it everyday shooter it would definitely be my custom built 264 Wm.

If this rifle is intended to be mainly a deer rifle I’d go 7mm08. It’s a fantastic cartridge on whitetail.
It would be my one deer gun forever cartridge if I ever had to.

looks like 60% are for the 270/280/06/7mag mix. does not surprise me a bit...been that way for many many years and isn't likely to change no matter how hard RS teeny calibers crowd push their agenda. those cartridges just work reliably for most anything anywhere...especially the 06. the 06 will never be unseated by the 6.5 manbun.

My favourite goto is always my .243 with 95gr NBT's. I used to always get the Win Silver Tips for it and have never been disappointed. Then I bought a 30.06 this year. Yeah, probably going to sell that and go back to my .243, just maybe in a fast twist, and get those 103's or 108's going through it, Or maybe even try the 6.5 swede and run 142 ABLR's or 143 ELDX's...
