I've killed them with .243, .270, and .45-70. If I were to put together a dedicated whitetail rig today, it would be a Tikka .243 8tw and I'd probably shoot 103 ELD-X to be 50 state legal and be good from the woods to the fields.

My current setup due to rules of the area I hunt is a CVA Accura MRX with open sights.

My shots are usually short and I’m colorblind so generally opt for a larger cal. 308 or 30-06. Last year I came back to the 45/70

My score sheet is heavily in favor of a 243... that being said, a 300 aac with a 190 hornady subx bullet is pretty awesome. If you can handle the drop, it can handle the rest.

There is a distinct advantage to shooting what everyone else at camp shoots. As long as your friends have shells then you’ll never run out.
Also applies to the easily obtainable. Stuff like 30-30, 30-06, 308... should you run out, a local gas station might have a box compared to trying to find a box of 348 win in podunk deer town usa

Please share more about subsonic kills using the 190 Sub-X bullet. I'm intrigued by that bullet.
I saw a ruger american ranch g1 in the lgs. Had an idea and a burris eliminator 2 handy, put my gemtech tracker 30 on it.

Fiochi 220's were too slow (760fps), but the hornady subx could be calculated for with the scope. I have a max calculated range of 156, its stupid quiet, shoots accurate, and kills well.

I've only taken 1 with it, a 50yd quartering to shot, it moved 30 yards after impact and expired. Autopsy resulted in full body cavity travel, and bullet stayed inside deer. Wasn't a huge deer, 125# tops. Minimal meat damage save the brisket. Blood trail was minimal, but not needed.

Would i use it again? Absolutely. Would it be my rifle of choice above all others, that's a 6.5 creed / prc for whitetail. But its a very nice way to hunt deer in touchy spots where supressed subsonic is wanted.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. It would be a very fun way to hunt stealthy areas. Unfortunately, where I hunt in the plains of Wyoming, even a supersonic .300 BLK has a trajectory like a rainbow.
