What's the compromise caliber?

I’m my opinion the best “compromise” cartridge is the biggest one you enjoy shooting. Try em out and don’t be too proud to admit they’re not fun to shoot. If you’re thinking at all about recoil on the range then it’s too big (for a compromise cartridge anyway).

308 has always been a compromise. Shot them for 30 years as I do not like recoil and prefer to shot more than others. Problem was I had to practice with heavier rifles and then hunt with lightweight ones. Ironically it’s now the largest /heaviest bullet for caliber I own.

Jumped on the 6.5CM a few years ago and happier for it. I can practice just as much with the same rifle I intend to hunt with. I’ll try the 22CM when the majors start to chamber for it. Also would love to see a 105-115 22 cal ELDX type bullet.

I've really enjoyed my 6.5 PRC's for a middle ground cartridge. They're fun and easy to shoot and still shoot the high BC bullets at a decent speed. But I think if I HAD to choose personally of a factory offering to hunt big game out to decent ranges, I'd possibly still pick a 6CM with 108's over a 6.5 PRC with 147's. I just can't hardly stomach a bullet going slower than 3000fps, for no rational reason whatsoever other than it makes me happy to be over 3000fps 🤷‍♂️ haha.

I searched a few key words but didn't come up with anything so excuse me if this has been covered. Please post a link to the thread.

With the debate on small vs large cartridges, what is the optimal middle of the road cartridge for a factory ammo shooter? If you don't want to shoot a 6CM or a 7 PRC where should you look? Is the 270 the optimal? 280AI? 308? 6.5CM? Is the SAAMI approval of the 25CM the silver bullet?
I didn't read any of the replies because I'm sure it's "interesting" lol. For me, compromise caliber is 6.5 PRC and that's exactly what I did. We have AR's in 223/556 for deer but my 6.5 PRC is what I use for anything bigger.

Outside the box the 6.8 Western maybe?

What type of wound channel at what distance?

Bullets matter.

Figure out the bullet that offers the desired wound channel at the desired distance with the least recoil to maximize hit rates.

P.S. This is the easy part!

I’ve harvested some big deer with a .556 , and still love my old 30-06. Played with a 6.5 prc for a while but it didn’t do anything for me. My vote for middle ground right now is a 6creed.

What is your typical max range you’re willing to shoot? That would narrow down your choices significantly.

I think pnw gator nailed it—this is nothing more than a popularity contest until you define the range capability and bullet/wound you want.

A 6.5creedmoor and a 6.5prc are 100% identical—not similar, but IDENTICAL—at a certain range for each, when shooting the same bullet. The velocity is the only difference…when your minimum velocity occurs at your max range, theres your minimum. Ditto for a .308, 3006, 300winmag, prc, rum, etc. So it makes zero sense to differentiate between them until after youve defined what bullet/wound and range.

Once you define the range and wound you want, that will define a list of cartridges and loads for your min/max, and from there you can choose a middle ground based on other factors, objective or subjective.

I think you’ll find that there is a very wide range of performance you can get from nearly all of these simply by choosing different bullets in any cartridge, and finding the middle is simply a matter of placating your emotional biases, what you already own, etc. Which is totally legit to me.

Ex, as a mostly short range deer hunter I was destroying deer shooting a 3006 with nosler ballistic tips or sst’s. To me that was beyond maximum. I went looking for a solution. My solution was to shoot lighter weight copper monos to reduce the wound channel, but from the same cartridge. I could also have accomplished +\- the same thing with much less recoil by going to a 223 shooting highly damaging bullets. A middle ground would probably not include any long-action or magnum cartridges since velocity is not my bottleneck, but I might choose middle of the road bullet weights between 110-150gr, and voila, I have a pretty extensive list of options that all sit squarely in the middle.
