just ordered a forbes in 07/08 and need some glass. like the looks of the 3-9x33 with cds. any others I should be looking at? like the idea of keeping it light but a 4-14x40 sure would be nice the rest of the year at the range and shooting at yotes

In Leopold anyway, the 3-9 and 3.5-10s always are easier to look thru than the 4-12 and 4.5 -14s.

I started with 3.5-10's and having saw a reason to change. If I was going to a longer range setup, I would add more power and other bells and whistles, but haven't done it yet. The gun will come before the scope.

I have a Leupold VXIII 36mm 2-8x on my ULA. You can't get the CDS on a V3 unless you go to the 40mm glass. I have the VXII 33mm CDS as well, it is nice glass too, but I liked the larger objective so I sacrificed the dials. I think the difference is only 2 or 3 oz., so get the features you want? I also have the larger 4-14 on another rifle, and I don't like it as much on the high magnifications.

Vortex viper 4-16x44 HS with BDC. Had a 3-9x36 on my rig before the viper, it did the deed well enough, but for 3 ounces more I got more flexibility with a wider zoom range and more light collecting ability That being said, my original sheep killer had a 5-15x50 Bausch and Lomb. It was just a little too big to be slugging up the mountain. The 4-16x44 seems to fit my needs perfectly.

Gotcha...so isn't more like a 7 oz difference in weight then? Leupoold VX-2 3-9X40 is 11.2 oz.....Vortex HS 4-16X44 is 18.4

Had to check my facts, for some reason had it in my head that my old vx2 was 15oz, but looks their site has it at 11.2. I stand corrected.

No worries...thought I was going crazy....I have a Viper 4-16X44 on my tank of a Ruger 338 WM but I'm not concerned about rifle weight on that one so I'll go with the heavier scope. For my mountain rifles its hard for me to want to put more more than a 11-12 oz scope on them, not so much for the weight as they look goofy as heck with a big 44mm objective and a 30mm tube on my dinky mountain rifles. :)

To clarify though, you can get a CDS on a VX3 2.5-8x36, just not stock so you have to get it after the fact thru their custom shop.. about $100 I think? Not as cost efficient as getting it standard on the 33 or 40mm, but can still be done I believe... I hope so anyhow as that is my offseason plan for the one sitting on my 7-08 Montana.

From the sounds of other forum members, your dinky mountain rifles are pretty famous, lol. I like the bigger look of the 44 mm on my tikka T3, but then again I also pack an 80mm swaro spotter, so maybe my opinion is quite skewed.

I compensate for my small objective rifle scopes with a 85mm Zeiss spotting scope ;)

As I remember they shipped USPS, at a very reasonable rate and seems like it was only a couple weeks before I got the knob. I like the shape and larger numbers they use.
