Of the food rations available, pemmican is the only choice that makes sense to me. Assuming it's real pemmican and not the soy based products you buy at REI, it should have the most calories per oz as well as provide the slowest burning energy source. I can't think of a good reason for fast carbs in a hunker down scenario. It's not like you're going to be running game into exhaustion. Chopping wood is probably the most calorie expensive task.

They get a basic kit. 2 tarps are included in that, one is canvas I forget the size and the other is a smaller plastic tarp. The 10 items are additional items that they select in addition to the basic kit every contestant is issued

Curious about you guys who posted your ten items on this page...whattaya gonna do for shelter w/o a tarp? Doesn't appear to be an abundance of caves on the island and the PNW is wet wet wet!

They give you a tarp that doesn't count towards your ten items(among a few other) items but you can pick and extra one as part of your 10

Gotta feel for the guy who loses his firestarter early on. I would never want my fire to burn out inside the tipi-shaped shelter. Cutting wood would occupy much of my time.

I don't know.... generous?... I think the majority of us would do very well.

Still working on my list.. keep changing my mind on certain items. Like the Leatherman.

Another item I keep going back/forth on is the sugar & salt. I sure like smoked fish.... a lot.

I know I'd sure be eyeing one of those bears. Find me a yew tree and carve me a bow & some arrows.... some jug plastic for fletchings. High fat, smoked food for months!

And why aren't they working on more stable shelters!!!? Fall storms are soon approaching!

And I'd think everyone of them should be framing up a canoe. And I'd be going through my kit looking for something to re-purpose into fishing lures or jigs... shiney zipper pull, pot lid...anything.

I don't know... easy to sit here and say if I were them, I'd do this or that... quite another to be super hungry, run down and missing my family.

The difference is YOU'd be rolling these plans around BEFORE arriving. These wingnuts are winging it. Failure to plan is planning to fail. That's why my teepee would be strongly reinforced with tree limbs, cordage and duct tape. Building a canoe is an interesting idea.
