Kuiu????

Randy

If you got picked up for the show, any of the company's with their own marketable camo line, Kryptek, Sitka, Kuiu, and Firstlite, would have the potential to have their product shown with 10-13 episodes of national television. It would be the cheapest advertisement they could do.

I was kind of being smart with the kuiu comment. But you are right---it would be one huge venue for some company especially if the dude or dudette won.

I am surprised with the quality of gear compared to last year (Choices they make). The one dude (This season) is wearing a Carhart cotton shirt. Dumb Dumb... Down bag???? WTH?

Last Year, The one guy that outlasted most, was wearing Arcteryx

Also surprised at the skillset so far. Luca Miller on the Season one, built a cabin and a boat. Alan built a fish trap.

They are off to a very bad start.

Well so far I believe they are just showing the ones who are going to drop quick. They are trying to fill tv time while they can. Im sure some of the others will do much better. However I truely believe that dont matter how good your skills are its all mental. I believe Alan from last year would be damn hard to beat because his mind was in the right place.

Perhaps I should go for it, and then see who's willing to make me a set of clothes with pants long enough. I don't think they'd want me advertising their gear with their pants halfway up my shin.

It looks like Kelty supplied the packs and maybe Muck supplied some boots. Otherwise it's been a shit show for clothing. I do think someone in the other thread is right that the producers picked some ringers and some dead weight to go early. They said that they had more than 3,000 applicants. There are plenty of potential contestants who would know enough to not to bring a down bag to a rain forest. Lucas from the season before was also one of the few that brought a proper saw. A little limb trimmer is borderline worthless for the amount of wood that you would need to process.

Obviously they're aren't planning on moving much, but the one guy brings a dutch oven - that's a bit much.

1. One-man cross cut saw
2. double bit cruiser axe
3. multi seasonal sleeping bag (-20 Wiggy's)
4. 2 QT pot with lid
5. 300-yard roll of nylon single filament fishing line and 25 assorted hooks (No lures)
6. 3.5 lb roll of trapping wire
7. pocket knife (buck 110 folder)
8. Ferro rod set
9. Slingshot
10. 5 lbs of gorp (raisins, m&m’s and peanuts)

Yup, for sure... Survival is 75% mental. I think most people who "think" they know what it would be like, try and tough talk themselves (and others) into thinking they will make it... and "help the bear if there is a fight" mentality takes over... till the boat gets out of sight :)

I agree, that most here would do well... my weakness would be eventually missing my family, but I can channel that emotion and use it as motivation. I live in/grew up in northwestern WA... which is almost identical to Vancouver Island... and I would enjoy the test there as it would be like the environment I have been living in and hunting all my life.

Around here its all about the water - so my list would revolve around how to keep it off and build a shelter - and I tend to go tool heavy.

1. Synthetic sleeping bag
2. Bivy Bag
3. Knife
4. Axe
5. Saw
6. Ferro Rod
7. Paracord or fishing line - if in Vancouver, likely the latter
8. Pot.
9. Tarp
10. Leatherman

There isn't a lot of small game in the area - sure there is some, but the water is where the natives got their food from, and where I would try mostly. A substantial shelter, with continual goals is a must. Build a primitive shelter early on, but while you are fresh and stronger, jump right in to a long term, thick walled shelter - both for elements, and peace of mind with animals.

Also, a long term, wood drying solution is huge in PNW... gather/harvest, but be prepared to "kiln dry" or smoke or something as it is very difficult to sustain fire around here - at least in the fall/winter.

Great show, but a lot of wanna-be's on it. Looking forward to watching!

You can watch the episodes (at least the first one) online: http://www.history.com/shows/alone

Not sure if they'll make the rest of them available as the season goes on, but I'm pretty sure they did last season.

Just watched last season, the gill net is a solid food producer that is sit and forget. Though I would think the hook/line option would be great to keep busy in the down time.

The axe injury seemed overplayed. Knew it was gonna happen the way she was using it. I thought that chick has more sense.

Yeah, she doesn't seem to be the brightest bulb on the island. Love the puddles of rain in front of her shelter. And how about the dude who loses his ferro rod in the fire? 2nd guy to lose his fire starter on the show----you would think that they would hold onto that thing with everything they had.

I agree with the ferro rod guy last season lost his by the water, and lasted 7 more hours before he bailed. Last season they lost 3 I think in the first week. This time only one guy on the first day. I laughed at him big talk about the bears and they were gonna have to drag him off the island, or save a bear if he got in a fight with it and he bailed in 7 hours cause of bear sign. The Mike guy from Colorado was pretty smart with his gill net. Other guy running the trot line doesn't seem to bright either.

Yeah for sure on the gill net. Yeah Mike, the Kris Kristofferson look alike, seems to be pretty sharp. Hopefully he can keep it together upstairs and avoid any injury or illness. Ill give Mary Kate more credit then I originally did. She lasted over a week with all her gear being soaked. I figured she would throw in the towel as soon as her bag got soaked. That would be a hard one to recover from. I think her days are numbered though.

As far as the fire rod! I would have that damn thing strapped to me at all times! You cannot last out there without fire and its so wet it would be nearly impossible to start one without one.

You'd think that a former wildlands firefighter would have more well thought out ace handling skills. I winced the moment she started splitting wood that way.

I thought that chick has more sense.

I also thought the same thing. I find myself thinking that about too many people too often, and then they bring the proverbial axe down on their hand just like she did and you remember that common sense isn't so common anymore (like in your pic earlier in the thread). You gotta give her some credit for lasting as long as she has and not bailing the moment her she found out her down bag was wet...but at the same time, who cuts wood like that???

Curious about you guys who posted your ten items on this page...whattaya gonna do for shelter w/o a tarp? Doesn't appear to be an abundance of caves on the island and the PNW is wet wet wet!
