What would you do?

I’d get the rifle chambered for the cartridge you really want, not just what fits the bolt face. Good used replacement bolt is $250ish, sell yours for $250ish. Magazines and followers are pretty cheap for push feed guns.

Not deceived at all. It’s buried in the 100 some odd page 6 UM thread, but there were some members having issues.

Not knocking your design at all - you clearly have it figured out. For me personally, a 6 PRC is more appealing.

Carry on.
I'm not taking offense at all. But what you are saying isn't true.

If there were 100 pages of 6PRC, there would also be some issues, and some of those issues are customer issues, not rifle issues:)

In the hundreds of load devs I have done for myself or customers, you start to see a trend with cartridges. The 28 Nosler, 300 Rum, and the 6-7PRC come to mind as finicky.

I also agree with you, the 6PRC is a fantastic cartridge, especially with the new 6mm bullet offerings on the horizon. But the 6um30 is better cause you can load and go. But I might be a little biased on that one.

1 less step in the reloading process certainly doesn't hurt the argument for the 6 UM over the PRC.

I'm going to try it out suppressed and see if I can snag a rokstock for it. I'll go from there. It'll be a secondary hunting rifle. Was also thinking if I left it 300wsm it might be a good candidate for mono bullets if/when I want/need to use them.

Otherwise I'm liking the idea of 6UM 30* or 6 PRC still...

UM was talking about making CDI style DBMs for win 70s at some point which would be sweet.

What are the data differences between the 6UM30 and the 6PRC? (I don't reload at the moment, just learning where everything falls in the 6mm space).

Ex:
-What casing does each use?
-Avg MV (assume ELDM)
-Distance it reaches 1800 fps
-Recoil energy
-Wind drift

6 Prc is the shorter 6.5 PRC parent case
6 “um-30” is a 6 SAUM so 7 or 6.5 saum parent case UM now has ready to load headstamped 6UM brass

The PRC gives up 100 FPS to a 6 SAUM

1800 @ 1000(PRC) 1070 (saum)

Recoil energy is indistinguishable

Same wind drift out to ~ 1300 yards

Thanks for posting that. I knew I had seen the numbers in the 6um and 6 PRC threads. For me, the head stamped brass ready to load would be nice for sure.

For those who reload and have necked down brass, is annealing pretty crucial in that initial step?
I don't have an annealer setup yet so that might sway my choice one way or the other.

I'm going to throw my raptor 8 on the 300wsm and see how it shoots but I'm still fairly certain I'll build something in a smaller cal.

I do not anneal 6 prc or 6UM after necking down both parent 6.5 brass
Just load it and shoot especially with lapua and ADG already being annealed I don’t think it’s necessary
I have an annealer but find myself only annealing every 2-3 firings or over winter when time allows. For the hotrod 6s you’ll lose primer pockets pretty quick so an annealer is definitely not required

How many firings before the primer pocket is toast about?
