Hi All,
I need some advice because I'm not sure which way to go. I'm based in Australia and my son 13 year old son is going to start deer hunting with me so I need another rifle. Because of the laws here, I cant use anything less than a .270, so I'm looking at a 7saum or 7mm-08. Should I look at something else? 7PRC and just download it until he gets bigger? I already have a 300PRC which is way too much gun for him. Custom build is an option as well. Any help would be great. Thanks

He's 13, 7/08 would be plenty gun for his lifetime, it's a great cartridge, relatively low recoil.

What state are you in that requires 27 cal or larger?

The 270 is a great sambar round, it is all I used for the first 20 years of my hunting career, but I also really like the 708
I would probably favor the 708, on the other hand the SAUM has a number of drawbacks and I wouldn’t even consider it
Hands down choice for me is a Tikka 708, followed by the same rifle in 270

7mm-08 is great hunting cartridge. My wife uses it (in a suppressed Kimber Montana) for both whitetail deer and elk. She took a cow elk last trip at 420 yards. One shot and the Elk just dropped. A Tikka T3x in 7mm-08 would be an excellent choice.

7mm08 is a forever cartridge. And would be my choice if I was forced to one rifle for everything. All my hunting of big game has been whitetail so far.

My two primary hunting rifles are a 270win and a 7mm08. Thank God they are in two different packages or I would have a tough time deciding which one to use that day. They both go on my whitetail hunts.
If I had to toss one and only use the other I would probably keep the 270.
