I was curious what everyone uses for a sleep system when using a tipi? Do you Bivy inside? Have read some guys use tyvek to lay under there pad. Was hoping to see what others use for setups. New to flourless so trying to get as much info as possible. Thanks in advance!

I run a 25 inch wide Qcore pad, Enlightened Equipment 20 Degree Quilt, a small reflective tarp under me and a ultralight bivy if its really chilly. Sea to Summit Pillow. If your a bigger guy Justin I highly recommend taking the weight penalty and going with a Wide pad. Its worth the extra few ounces to get a better night sleep.

Remember though what works for one guy may not for you. So keep an open mind about it.

It also kind of depends on the weather and region you are hunting. I have done the Tyvek thing with just a piece under my sleeping pad. This works fine for cooler weather when there weren't bugs to worry about. That said, I had Borah Gear make me a bug bivy that I plan to use this year. As MMM mentiones, it's nice to keep things contained and "protected" even when you aren't sleeping.

I run almost exactly what SHTF runs minus the bivy. works great for early season. My quilt is not as warm as his but I would run my BA summit park bag in mid to later archery seasons.

Under a BPWD La Garita 1: Tyvek ground cloth 9'x3', Thermarest (I think) Prolite Plus, North Face Cat's Meow 20 deg bag, and Sea to Summit bug net if needed. Both the pad and the bag could stand to be upgraded, but they work just fine for summer and good weather in early fall when I've tent camped. I'll find out soon if this setup totally sucks under a tarp.

I like room to move, so a small bivy kind of defeats the purpose of having a nice roomy quilt. I'm really liking my current setup....basically a pyramid tarp (which can be set up high like a tarp or down to the ground in windy weather) along with a 4 ounce light Tyvek, and for buggy times a 4 ounce doulbe Sea to Summit pyramid net. The great thing about this also in the summer is that the pyramid net and tyvek can be used outside of the tarp in the cool shade of a tree.

I have an EE 20 degree quilt, looking at an Xtherm pad, all in a TiGoat ptarmigan bivy. Seems like a fairly light bivy for a decent price. Anyone have any experience with them?

Every time I use a floorless shelter, which is most of the time, I use a an EE 10° quilt on an long/wide Exped Downmat UL7, inside a long/wide Borah M90 bivy. I ordered my bivy with stake loops on the corners to keep everything in place when I toss and turn. I also use an Exped medium Air Pillow. This is my current sleep system from summer scouting to late season hunts. The only thing I change is, I add base layers and beanie if it's real cold. I am very happy with this setup, with exception of the pad weight. It's pretty heavy, but very warm and comfortable.

I use my tipi (12 person) strictly for a base camp and generally speaking, we sleep on cots. I also have a two person nest that I have used on one occasion.

same as 7mag but a Q core pad (wish it was the wide) the Borah bivy was worth the wait time although I only have stake loops on the foot end going to be adding them to the head for sure!
Felt like my 10* quilt was to warm in summer so I got a MW 35* bag and its tight after being in a quilt for a couple years we'll see, going to try it this weekend

Damn mistype! Lol Vegan isn't in my vocabulary. I will be in Montana off and on September thru November this year. I'm hoping that the more time I spend in the field the more proficient I become and work out all of the kinks

I bought a floor for my tipi.
Then I wondered why?
The advantages of a floor less tent is one of the reasons you buy a tipi.

But, then you realize that even with a floor insert, the spiders get in, the snakes can get in, and the water can get in.

So, you end up with a bivy.
Keeps goose down bags dry even if water gets in, keeps spiders out of your sleeping bag.
Still might find a snake under your bivy, but thats living floor less.

I got spider bites once. Left the tent in the morning, came back at night, slept, woke up with nasty spider bites around my shirts waist line.

Decided to bug bivy.
But if you want water protection for the underside, you will need more than the mesh bivy sack.

If winter camping on snow, or on wet ground, the waterproof bivy is the way to go. You can get them with bug screens.
