Looking to switch up the heavier, stiffer boot for archery elk. Looking for recommendations on a tough hiking shoe or a lightweight boot.. Also when going this route are you wanting waterproof or will that not breathe well? Any other considerations?

I have been happily running the Vivobarefoot Tracker Forest Esc for several years now.

After going through lightweight hiking shoes and low-rise boots, I have valued breathability and quick-drying. Waterproof models are something I would personally stay away from with my needs. Adjust your socks accordingly and you should be set for variance in weather.

I've had a pair of danner pronghorn for about 5 years now. Will be 6 this season. Many miles on them. They work well and hold up good. Uninsulated, and waterproof. They are the older style. Not sure about the new model

Salomon forces speed assault 2 with aftermarket insoles of your choice.

Or, topo terraventure.

I don’t think waterproof is necessary for September archery elk. Non-waterproof footwear will dry over lunchtime if they get wet.

I would steer clear of the waterproof boots entirely. In a good rain it is only a matter of time before they are soaked. And then they taken about 3 days to completely dry out.

Topo Mtn Racers with Kahtoola mid RenaGaiters is my setup at the moment - now and then tagging in the Xero Ridgeways which absolutely refuse to die.
