Mountain Hardwear Compressor (Synthetic), for general purpose use and wet weather. It's a warm jacket, but I don't like the cut and fabric as much as the previous version I had.
Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisper (Down), for a UL liner. Use this one all winter under various jackets, and sometimes for light summer trips. Not durable, but adds warmth as a mid layer and takes up near zero room in my pack.
A $29 Cabelas "Synthetic Down" and Sitka Kelvin Vest for when I expect to get seriously dirty or bloody. These are both more durable than most.
I just picked up the Kryptek Down Aquillo on a deal earlier this year but I haven't given it a good workout yet because it's simply been too hot out to really need it. The few times I've worn it I've been impressed with the comfort and warmth. I like the cuffs on the sleeves, a nice stretchy material that seals well and is comfortable. It's a pretty athletic cut and fits me well. I also like the weight and how well it compresses but you'll get similar results with other down puffy's. My next puffy will probably be a First Lite Uncompagre as I feel there is a time and a place for down and synthetic and I'd alternate depending on the conditions I was planning on hunting.
I know a lot of the guys on here have a ton more experience than me and many have used most of the big brand names out there and could give you a direct comparison so take my thoughts with a grain of salt as it's the only high end puffy I've every had. I got mine on a sale for around $120 and at that price I'd definitely buy it again.
Montbell UL Parka til snow hits the ground, then I swap it for a Montbell Alpine Light, both hooded, both very fragile but I only ever wear them in camp or when glassing. Going to be doing a fly in hunt in the Selway this Sept and am considering getting a synthetic puffy, I usually am no more than a day from the truck hunting here in CA but for this hunt relying on down insulation has me a little nervous.
Synthetic: Kifaru Lost Park.....only about 4 months of use thus far but man that thing is warm....I do wish they had a full zip model though. Be worth the weight for me.
Down: GoLite Bitterroot.....by far the best warmth to weight of the puffy jackets I have.
Speaking of cheap down jackets, here is a Walmart special for as low as $14 right now depending on size. I wouldn't expect it to compete with any of the puffy's being spoken of in this thread but for the price it might be worth picking up for someone. Heck, for that price who cares if you thrash it... I ordered one of the $8 kids ones for my son so we'll see how it turns out.
