What plant/nut is this?

Found several of these along a stream/creek in CO over the weekend. What is this?

It was definitely a form of nut instead of a fruit. I broke it open and the inside was similar to a walnut.

The first picture doesn’t show it great but there was a stem that on others is attached to a small twig/branch.

Kind of looks like a sycamore seed ball but sycamore seeds don't look like a walnut.
