What lb bow do you use for Elk?

Just a quick survey on bow poundage.

I have a high # bow, but I'm tempted to find a 60# max. 31" draw lends itself to speed

70, but have the 75 mods to try out this year. Shot 70 the last 20 years, but figured I'd give it a try since it's easy to add the mods.

The poundage in the survey may be a little more accurate if it was more directly correlated to the Poundage Range most limbs are produced in. Ex. 50-60, 60-70, 70-80? I guess it depends what kind of data you are looking for specifically.

Either way I am pulling 71lbs on 60-70lb rated limbs.

Of course, there is a always a compromise of choosing the potential answers for a poll.

if your bow is set to 60 which category would you choose if 60 was in 50-60 and 60-70? Both.

Also, depending on the brand ranges vary. PSE lists 50,60,70,80 with 10 turns of adjustment. Prime lists one bow as 40-80. Bear lists one of theirs as 55-70.

Have my 60# bow dialed down to 56# 27inch draw. It's been there for over 10 years now. Has got it done for me on a number of elk (including 55 yard passthrough on a big bodied Rooselvelt Bull in my avatar).

Caveat......I also shoot fixed blade broadheads and being 100% sure of the range is a must, she's far from a speed demon

When it comes to elk, I prefer to call myself a bow hiker or bow packer. It's similar to hiking or backpacking, you just do it with a bow and hunting gear. Similarly you come out lighter than you went in. I've found a 70# bow overkill for this endeavor.

I have shot 70-74# almost all of my hunting life, but my killingist bow I have owned maxed at 63#, and I’m 28.5” draw

My current bow is the second 60# bow I’ve owned, because I found a good deal, and 60# is more than adequate, especially with your draw length

My sis in law killed a roosie this fall at just shy of 50# and I believe 24.5 or 25”, 450gr arrow and a 100gr kudu+, shot went in behind last rib, cut through the off side scapula and poked out the skin, went about 20yds… that was about 4 feet of penetration on an elk and still having enough steam to cut through the offside scapula

I assume the next bow I buy will be 70# just because, but there is nothing marginal about a 60# bow for elk, especially with your draw

You shooting 60# is very close to me shooting 70# with our difference in draw length, draw length gets speed a lot quicker than draw weight.

It’s nice having a 60# bow when you see antlers coming through the brush and can draw super slow in plain sight and not be seen… or practice, my mind fatigues before any part of my body with a 63# bow, just never get tired, form doesn’t start breaking down after 30 minutes of shooting

At 60#, you can still get really good speed out of a 500gr arrow

Completely agree.. My friends wife killed a MASSIVE bull elk a few months back using mechanical broadheads 27" draw and 42#...... It was 20 yards but she did it.... I killed my first 4 deer with a 60# bow. It was not a high FOC arrow either.. I know that probably deflates the sails of a lot of folks but its proof that all of us waaay over think it

Everyone says long draws have the advantage but I speculate the sweet spot between arrow speed, arrow weight, draw length, and high FOC is probably 29-30" draw
