What is your elk setup?

After shooting a compound for 40 years I took up the recurve just before Thanksgiving and I will never shoot the compound again barring injury. I am addicted!

My son and I went on a DIY elk hunt in 2019 nearly getting it done in 3 days! The trip was cut 5 days short because he got altitude sickness. 2020 we canceled due to Rona and then my son joined the Navy last fall. Barring an unforeseen deployment we want to go back next year to Colorado.

My Current setup is an EXE Scream 21", Uukha Gobi Mediums 43lbs OTF. 32" GT Hunter 400's with 225 grain tips and 4-4" feathers. TAW 535 gr., Springy rest and either Magnus Stingers or Original Muzzy 3 blades for whitetails. For elk I would use either the Magnus or VPA 3 blades. My draw length is 29.75".

What is your elk set up, Bow, arrow, broadhead, draw weight, draw length and total arrow weight? What if anything should I change?

Thanks in advance!

Confidence in your setup is important, if you don't shoot it straight and know it will kill your hunter confidence will fail. My setup is a 17 satori, ukkah gobi med 45# limbs pulling 29.5 makes 50#, spring rest, carbon express max red SD 400, four 4 inch trad vanes with a 125 iron will , total arrow weight is 540g. This is my setup for everything from turkey to moose.

I have 2 bows that I’d like to eventually use for moose and caribou so I’d have no issue trying g either of them on an elk if I was trying to hunt with a bow.

The first is a black widow psa 62” 54@28” but my draw is over 29 so i get a bit more than 54lbs out of it.

The other I a bivouac backland 62” longbow that is 55@28”.

They both work really well with 6-700g arrows and single bevel broad heads.

I'm normally grabbing my Toelke Whistler #[email protected] I tore a rotator cuff in my bow arm and for some reason I can shoot my recurve pain free, but not the longbows.

So Uukha irbis #55 limbs on a 19" white feather lark wearing a creek walker quiver and tossing 620gr center shot 340's footed at 31" and pushing a 190gr simmons timbershark.

Mine will be a 58” Toelke Whistler #40 @28”, I have a 30” draw.
A Black Eagle 400, with. Magnus Stinger Buzzcut.
Total arrow weight @550 grains.

If I plan to hunt somewhere that requires more pounds I’ll just take a pen and change my bow weight to conform with the regulations.

If the shelf has some radius, or you build it up a little, shelf contact shouldn’t be a problem. I shoot nothing but 4 fletch and shoot off an elevated rest on my recurve and off the shelf on my longbow. Both work great.

Thanks, the shelf is radiused, I guess it is just my inconsistent form. What length and material are you running? I keep going back and forth between feather and tradvane. even trying 4x2".

I did 4x2 for a while, but switched over to 4x4 when I built woodies for the better stabilization with the lesser shaft material. So I just switched over to 4x4 in general, and it’s been really great actually, even on my aluminums. I’m using feather fletching.
