I didn't know this before I started Elk hunting.

A herd of Cows usually has a Bull at the back of the herd… pushing the Cows.
A lead mature Cow is guiding the cows.

I shot a cow in the middle of the herd passing by my blind. The guide says "why didn't you wait for the Bull?"

I'm like... why didn't you give me an Elk sociology lesson before we left camp. You know this is my 1st Elk hunt !

I'm a meat hunter anyway, but a Bull would have been nice. I never did see the Bull... as the herd scattered after the shot.

If a herd is running and some get tired they will just peel off and hide somewhere instead of keep running.

I hunted 1st & 2nd rifle season in CO. My success came during 1st rifle. Either sex tag.
Unit 70, antler restriction area, so you really need to watch. But I'm happy with the Cow.

The Bulls in unit 70 are nice, but not trophy; according to the trophy guys. A lot of 4x4's, etc.
