I bought a .300 Win mag that I want to get set up for elk. So far I have tried 180 gr coreloks and 200 gr precision hunters. The coreloks shot horrible. The eldx shot ok. I would say 1.5”. What other ammo would you try? Barrel is a 1:10. Thank you.

Is the rifle factory? If it is you might make sure everything is good like floating the barrel, action torqued to spec, lightened the trigger, etc before you chase different ammo brands.

I don't use factory ammo but after watching some friends shoot the Hornady precision hunter ammo that is the first thing I would try. Which it looks like you already did.

More info about the rifle, scope and your experience would help. Some years ago I decided I was going to become more proficient wit my rifles. It took a couple hundred rounds to really dial in my technique and realize the potential of the rifles I owned. It definitely wasn't an ammo issue.

Another vote for Barnes Vor-tx. I reload, but have bought factory before and it shoots great.

Hornady Superformance are worth a go. Used some in a pinch (.338 win mag) and they were accurate and did a number on the elk I shot.

I personally have been happy with the Nosler Accubond. In my 300 win mag though I went up to a 200 grain bullet. I’m buying the nosler custom. It’s spendy but it works for me and my gun. Maybe worth a box to try?

I would try the accubond for sure, either the regular or long range. The eld-x shot better out of my 300 but accubonds have won on others.
The new sierra gamechanger is interesting, and they are making some loaded ammo with it now (not sure if the 300 is available yet.) Sierra bullets generally shoot very well for people, and if the gamechanger can perform well on game it may become a great option!!

It’s a Steyr Prohunter with a Nikon Monarch 5. I’m not sure what to say about experience. I’ve been around guns since I was 5. I would say I’m a better than average shot.

Update. I made it to my dads property this afternoon with some 180 grain Nosler Accubonds. I shot a 3 round group at 0.7”. I adjusted and shot one more group at 0.6”. From there I went to 300, 400, and 500. I didn’t miss my 8” x 8” plate. I did notice I was shooting to the leftat distances. I’m a lefty so figured it was me pulling the trigger. I adjusted my finger placemat and was in the middle after that. The Accubonds are $60 a box. I can get ELDx ammo for $35 a box. I may go back to that and see if my barrel is just settling in. I only have 60 down the tube. If not I know accubonds will work perfect.

Good and good. Nice shooting.

At $3 a shot i would probably try to find a reasonable stand-in for trigger time. Even if it doesn't hit the same POA, as long as it's consistent. Dry fire a lot and shoot other rifles plenty if available.

Good luck.

I agree. I will try a few other ammo choices. I’ve heard that Nosler BT are very similar to Accubonds for just shooting. Then hunt with the accubonds. I have a .223, 6.5, and a .270 that I shoot a ton too.

Thanks for the kind words.
