What duck call should I get?

There's almost nothing you can't do with a $20 DR85. Buy 2 of them, wrap in electrical tape and go kill ducks.

I’m going to be the minority and tell you to skip the double reed and commit to learning on a single reed. I’ve never been one for using training wheels to get started (all three of my boys learned to ride a bike by the time they were 4 without them) I’m partial to an Echo timber. I’ll also give a nod to RM calls. The owner is one of if not the best guys in the call industry and you’re getting a call that will be something you have for a lifetime and sounds great once you get it mastered. He really does make an excellent product.

Yentzen are superb calls, mines is wood but I’d like a plastic one, unfortunately I don’t have an open ended budget

I can get geese to react more. Here it’s more about the spinner and being on the x. I give the ducks a few quacks on the turn or if they are going away. With the geese I can call them right into the ground and convince them it’s the place to be. I really like calling at specks but that call is a whole nother animal. Still trying to get it perfected.
I will second this, if I am field hunting I rarely blow my duck call unless I am specifically setting up on ducks.

@thinhorn_AK you can't go wrong really.

Molt Gear, Zink, Tim Grounds, C&S, RNT all solid.

As for learning how to call, highly recommend Bad Grammar dvd from Molt Gear and/or Honker Talk with Shawn Stahl. Those dudes know what's up.

My short list would be a single reed from any of these three:

Echo
RNT
Lares

I'm fortunate that Mack's PW is about 20 minutes from my hunting cabin, so I can try out most calls commercially available. If I couldn't, it would be hard to go wrong with one of the above.

I have a RNT QuackHead duck call I bought for like $20. Bought it in college (2007ish) I believe. Kills ducks to this day. IMO and experience knowing how and when to call is way more important than the call itself. $50 would be my absolute tops as far as duck calls go...also have $30 snow goose call I use to also call specs...same idea applies.

Call RNT and ask to speak to John Stephens. He will steer you in the right direction.

Cheap foiles or rnt for ducks, cheap zink for geese. Your decoy spread will earn you more opportunities than your calls. Best of luck!

Thanks everybody, I got a few affordable ones to get started with, one is a Zink power clucker, the other one is the cheaper one from last flight (or whatever the company is called).

Just getting into duck hunting, there are lots of different calls out there.

Which one should I get? Budget isn’t an issue, I’d like to get ones I’ll be happy with for a long time rather than buying cheap stuff that I’ll want to replace relatively quickly.

Thanks!!!

An echo is a great start if you want to go with a cheaper option but a higher end call I would recommend a JJ Lares hybrid. Great call rarely sticks and sounds amazing. The quiet low feeding sounds all the way to a loud hale call it does anything you want
