Thanks for the tips. This is a machine that's new to me and I'm new to sewing, so that's not a great combo right off the bat! I messed around with the thread tension settings, but that didn't resolve the problem. I called around and found a local shop that actually used to sell these new and the guy knows these machines inside and out. I took it to him and he's going to go through it and get it tuned up and dialed in for me. After a quick inspection, he did say that overall, the machine is in excellent condition, so at least I didn't buy a lemon. I'm looking forward to getting it back and getting to work!

That’s great news. Ask away if you have any questions or something doesn’t seem right. On an industrial machine always remember to hold the top and bottom thread tails from moving until you stitch the first 3 - 5 stitches. That seems to be the most common issue when starting from square one.

I won't do pictures unless you really want them. My list includes bridles, halters, britchen, chest harness, pack saddle harness, holsters, rifle scabbards, knife scabbards, and a few things that I made just because I needed it. All those were made with a stitching awl.

I have made a lot of mocassins out of elk and deer skins, a shirt, a pair of elkhide pants, shotgun chaps for everyone in my hunting crew. I even made a pair of elk hide saddle bags that were double thickness that I have used for 50 years.

Those were made with my mothers singer treddle machine. I have also made all the shoulder straps for my rifles. Most with foam padded shoulder cushions. The biggest challenge was a pistol holster that I built out of harness leather that was so tough I couldn't penetrate it with a stitching awl and had to drill the needle holes to get things started. I make most of leather items with 8-10 oz latigo.

I have probably made a lot of other items I have just forgotten about.

Made this awhile back. The goal was a small lightweight pack that could be used by itself or attach to my MR frame. Its got a small zippered pocket inside and can hold a 2L bladder.

I hear the day job part, I have friends and family that want me to make some things for them and I have a ton of ideas for things I want to make but my job is crazy and my step-son is in tournament baseball so finding time to sew and do house projects and do some fishing is very difficult.

This is more or less a prototype/proof of concept for a bigger bag, but thought it could be used as a med bag or something. A lot of things I’d change to make it look better but overall came out good. Most technical piece of gear I’ve made.

The time consuming details that you’ve included make it stand out as more than a typical DIY bag - nicely done.

First sewing project, still have a lot to learn about pattern making and the best way to go about sewing it up. This should work for now though, a sleeve for a wood stove, also worked on a tube for the stove pipe. Sewing circles is a bit more difficult going to try it again.

Also if you get a milspec (it's thicker and heavier) grosgrain it will be easier to bind your edges. The lighter and cheaper grosgrain is a pain.

Thanks for the advice, I grabbed it from ripstop by the roll without putting enough thought into it, will definitely go with a wider heavy grosgrain next time. Might should have started with something other than xpac as well, but it was on sale at the time.

I have the exact same stuff and haven't touched it after trying some milspec from Rockywoods. It's not necessarily wider just a little heavier material.

Finally got around to making a new bag for my Kifaru frame. The smaller bag I did earlier was a proof of concept to make sure I understood how the Y-zip would need to go together, it’s a pain with bigger zippers, and I’m not sure I would do it again, but if I were to I know a few things I would change. I tried to get cute with the lid and make it taper and dome and I’m not super happy with the way it turned out but it is functional and I know how I would simplify it a lot more next time. I put the long side pockets on it, but afterwards I don’t know if I need them on there. I am really happy with how it turned out and it’ll serve me well this fall.

Should be about 3000 cu in. Fits nice and snug on my frame I’ll do some testing with it before I take it hunting but I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t hold up. It’s all 500D cordura and the sleeve to slide over the frame is 1000D.

I’m running a consew CP206RL. It does a pretty good job. I was running an old Kenmore for a while and this one really does a better job, walking foot is nice.
