What did you do at the range today?

Complaining about having to comply with NFA laws? What are you going to do if you get pulled over on the way to the range?

"I'm not driving, officer. I'm merely travelling in my conveyance and have no contract with you."

What did I do at the range today?

I'm still pushing thru the suck on my seated unsupported shooting; a hold over from the Cold Bore Challenge 2026.

Other than a slight elevation change, all this mess below is failure to command the gun and body position.

Getting better...Everything is getting smoother too. I can arrive, build, shoot, pack up in 5 minutes currently.

600 yards, seated supported, one shot per day. 8MOA target.

What grip and stock is that if you don’t mind me asking
Both from Made Rifle. Not really in production now. The owner is in Canada and their whole sytem hates gun companies. He has also had issues getting stuff to the US for a while. We are working on getting his stuff moved but it will be a while.

Thanks for the reply they both just caught my eye and looked slick

Had Monday off as a "floating holiday" for work. Drove two hours north to a DNR run range. $10 for the day. Finally got to shoot past 200 yards for the first time. The long rifle range was split: 200, 250 and 300 yards on one side of the road (used to drive down to set up targets). Then on the other side, steel plates at 300, targets at 400, 500 and 570 yards. Had steel plates at 570.

I was not prepared. Wasn't sure what rounds my rifle was sighted in for and don't own a spotting scope. I could just barely make out some holes at 400. I should've moved over to the 200 to get my zero.

Once somewhat zeroed my ballistic calculator was right on! Happy about that. I shot ok. Couldn't see any holes at 570 but did pepper the crap out of the 8 x 8 steel plate at 570.

Chrono'ed 50 rounds of 6.5 CM using 142 SMK's over 36.3gr of Varget. 2635 fps, SD of 10.6. ES had a few outliers on the high side. Had a few rounds sitting in a hot chamber due to a chatty neighbor.

Yesterday I took 3 of my pistols to the range to start breaking in a new carry-ish pistol and test two others out after modifications. It wasn't a long session since it was already a 98 degree heat index by 10:30AM when I left. I shot 100 rounds through a new 365 Macro Comp in an Icarus Air Polymer grip module that I threw a Sig Romeo-X SIG-LOC Compact red dot on plus some tungsten weights and a Maskas mag catch in. That's going to be my hiking gun that I'll carry in a HPG runners snubby kit bag. Already got a trigger sheath for it and I'm looking forward to it. It's quite controllable for its size.

After that I put 180 rounds through my Sig P211 since I just changed the mainspring to a 19# one and it worked flawlessly as usual. The 211 has basically zero recoil now that I put brass LOK APS grips and a tungsten guide rod in. Then I put 160 rounds through my cajunized Shadow 2 and ran into about 3-4 total issues with the trigger needing to be pushed forward to reset. Going to have them get it running reliably. I assume a bit more needs to be taken off its disconnector but they can figure it out.

Edit: I'll include some pictures of the guns so it's not just a wall of text.

I made it back to the range today, despite hot temperatures and intermittent showers.

First, I shot some positional drills at the Carl Ross target using my Tikka T3x .223. Nothing spectacular. I managed to get 16/20 hurrying, but without someone else timing me, it's tough to say whether I would have actually gotten off all the shots in a timely manner. I am inclined to doubt it, but at least I got to practice positional shooting a bit.

Then I shot my Sauer 100 in 9.3x62. I bashed my supporting hand pretty well on the first couple of shots and I couldn't get comfortable shooting it after that. I'll give it another try next time. I may need to shoot it some more from a standing supported position.

After that, I shot this rifle. Probably due to using a different grip, I shot much better with it than I did with the Sauer. I used some of the Hornady 286-grain factory seconds (or, more likely, someone's reloads that were sold to me as factory seconds). I am fairly pleased with the results.

Then I shot a bench group with the .223 to reward myself for shooting the 9.3x62 twenty times.

Those neoprene pads on your shooting mat - you add those, or are they an accessory purchase?

You are a good dude, but there are some dumb things in this post.

Complaining about having to raise the range flag?

Not shooting the wildlife is a pretty standard range restriction. Especially because most ranges are designed to be safe based on an expected direction of fire. You would not be the first person to have a ricochet shooting at a snake or similar pest. At one of my range sessions this past spring, some idiots let grandma shoot her .38 snub nose on the rifle range. Her shots were hitting the 25-yard target (impressive!) then hitting the ground about the 75-yard line and skipping over the berm. I made them take her one range over to the pistol range where she safely kept hitting the target.

Complaining about having to comply with NFA laws? What are you going to do if you get pulled over on the way to the range?

In Montana they just assume everyone has a firearm so they don't ask anymore. Especially once we went constitutional carry. I mean I have my papers but the odds of being asked for them by a leo are slim.

Yeah I get it. Especially with all the air force boys we have out here. God bless em but I could definitely see one of them shooting a snake and hitting a vehicle or something.

Either way life is a lot easier just shooting on public land.
