What did you do at the range today?

Not much difference between my usual groups with the Tikka today.

The 100-yard drill remains challenging with my broken leg, but I continue to attempt it. The RokStok is still awesome for all shooting positions.

The CZ 527 did slightly better with the AAC 123-grain ammunition today. I still love the Trijicon Accupoint.

My backpack wasn’t full enough to be a really good rest today. I am looking forward to having the Molinator the next time I go to the range.

I did slightly better on the 100-yard drill today, but still not a very creditable performance.

I took my Sako L579 out to the range yesterday. It’s one of the prettiest rifles I own and has historically been very accurate. I shot a nice buck with it last year. I recently changed the scope on it (put on an older B&L Elite 3000), so I figured I should sight it in, even though I will probably never hunt with it again.

I used Hornady American Whitetail 100-grain ammo.

After shooting the .243, I did an interrupted Carl Ross drill with my Tikka. I bungled the first two offhand shots and felt pretty terrible about myself. It’s hard to stay stable with the boot on my leg, but I still managed a 14/20 thanks entirely to my new pack setup, which made up for some of my limitations from the broken leg. I strapped my new Molinator onto my assault pack. So far, it’s proven quite stable with a set of old Cammies inside it. I will have to adjust the setup a bit once I stuff my heavy winter coat into it, but that is fairly easy.

There was a polite young man trying to sight in his new-to-him 2009 Marlin 336 a couple of bays down from me. He asked for my help after he spent about 25 of the 40 rounds he brought with him. The Marlin scope on his rifle was poorly mounted. The rings were half tight on one side and screwed down farmer tight on the other. I turned the rings off the base with ease, only to discover that the iron sights weren’t even on paper. It was my first time shooting a 336 and I was impressed with the recoil management. Much better than the old Winchester .30-30s I have previously used. I tried helping him fix it all up, but I had forgotten my gunsmith’s bag. Since he was so friendly and polite, I told him if he brought it back Friday morning (with at least two boxes of ammo), I would help him sort it out.

Yesterday and today's groups from my new (old stock) Tikka T3X.

No mods/straight-out-of-the-box, Talley ultra-light rings + Bushnell 3200 3-9 scope, 7mm-08, 1:9.5 twist, Norma 308 brass sized and fire-formed to 7mm-08 (1 x fired as 308, 1 x fired fire-forming, and today was 1 x fired now fully formed), 140 Sierra Tipped Game Kings (TGK), Today 41.5 grains of Varget, 2.870 OAL (.063 off the lands) @ 2795 FPS, yesterday 42 grains of Varget 2.822 OAL @ 2857 FPS.

Been too hot outside, can only do 2 shots a time with 10-15 mins cooling in between, and I only get an hour on my lunch break. But I'd say overall, this is looking very plausible -- especially considering I have my doubts still about the 140 TGK's actual accuracy potential because of notable dimensional differences between bullets in the same box and also observable runout on the poly tips. But if this accuracy holds with larger sample sizes, I'd huck lead at critters out to 500 or so yards with this.

I'll have to try some 140 Accubonds soon-ish and we'll see how they compare.

Yesterday with more Varget/more jump (2858 FPS).

Today - looking better, and a bit more to the right (I can't recall for sure, but I think I cranked the scope 3 clicks to the right after yesterday's range session).

Went to a friend's land to sight in my 18" AR with a new load. Nothing like shooting from the back of a short bed Tacoma off a pack!

axZM7sxl.jpg

up .2 left .1 and I was back home before our toddler awoke from his nap. This is ready to go out for CO's fall turkey season tomorrow.

First, I helped remount the scope on my new friend Drew’s Marlin 336. It shot pretty well, all things considered. Between us we got three 5-shot groups between 1.55 and 1.74”.

Then I shot a Carl Ross drill with my Tikka. 15/20. It’s hard to shoot a great score when you drop the first two shots.

So, I fired off a bunch of offhand shots with my CZ 457. I kept shooting for too long and got fatigued and sloppy, but at least 37/50 stayed inside the 4” ring. Plenty of room for improvement.

So, I finished up with 50 rounds prone using my backpack and jellyfish.

Had a super lousy day at the range, that's what I did, LOL. The kind of day that makes me want to go home and sell all my rifles except a couple of the sentimental ones and commit to not shooting deer past 50 yards ever again and only go to the range once a year to see if I can hit a pie plate at 50 yards.

I really (REALLY) hope I find when I get home that I had a scope break or bases come loose or something. This is a follow up experiment to the two earlier loads I had tested (see a few posts back), both of which were down around an inch. (this is a composite of several groups I shot today - took the pic I scored through a spotting scope).

Working a lot of OT before deer season , so I took my primary rifle out to the ranch and shot a quick 3 round group at 100. It’s a tikka 6cm with an 18” PBB barrel. I’d say that works. Back in the safe until deer season

Worked up from 300, 400, 500, 600, 750, and finally my first 1,000 yard hit with my 6.5 Creedmoor.

143 ELD-X handloads with H4350 shooting 2736 fps average at 76 degree temp.

Is it a requirement that if you are a disgusting fat body with a SBR AR with a brake on it that you have to setup in the booth next to the guy shooting suppressed?
LOL

I have a buddy that drew a late season Muley tag and he wanted to get sighted in for the hunt. So yesterday I took him to the range. He's shooting a 300 Win Mag with a big ole brake on the end of it. I set up about 4 or 5 tables down from him, and could still feel it on every shot. We are both bowhunters but still like to shoot. I took my Seekins PH2 6CM with my new DA Nomad TiXC on it (first time using the suppressor). We started at 100 to get zero'd. That was quick and easy for me. The rifle was already zero'd without the suppressor. Took two shots, they were touching 3" low and 1" right. Adjusted the scope and shot three more.....nice little cloverleaf all touching about 1/2" high.

My buddy got zero'd then we went to the 400 yard range. He had a little more trouble with that, but my first shot after dialing for 400 hit literally in the middle of the 1" bullseye. I spent the rest of the morning shooting the multitude of the steel setups there. By the time we were done, my buddy was finally slamming steel at will as well.

I also took my new CZ 457 SR .22LR with the DA Mask, and subsonics. The first shot my buddy says "was that a misfire". I smiled and said "nope, the lead is going down range". It's almost comical shooting that thing, it's like dry-firing it with the faint "click" as the only sound heard. It was a good range day.

Redeemed myself from that ^ nonsense, that's what I did.

Brought out my 7x57 to remind myself that when the gun shoots good, I can shoot good. I also ran a group with the 7mm-08 after replacing the scope, and I'm about 'this close' to concluding that the scope I pulled off of it has issues. I did a Bad Thing(tm) by changing more than one variable at a time, in that I shortened up the OAL a bit, but I don't really think I went from 3.5 MOA to 1.5 MOA just by moving the bullet back from the lands a little.

7x57, 3 shots from a cold bore/pre-hunting zero verification (175 ELD-X's at 2535 FPS over N555 and BR2 primers).

7mm-08 - 7 rounds, not super-impressive (I did not call that flier/don't think that was me), but, regardless, that is definitely redemptive when compared to my previous trip to the range with it.
