Around 11 last night I was hiking along a closed road in the forest and heard something down in the drainage that I've never heard before in my life. This was in the coast range of Oregon. Whatever it was called three times, the first two were like a guttural bellowing and then I was able to pull out my phone and record this noise which is a little different, not as low in pitch. It sounded 100-200 yards away and was loud. Maybe it was some kind of elk vocalization but I've just never heard it before and I grew up in a town overrun by elk and I am around them a lot at work. What the hell was this?

You sure there isn’t a road or access point where you heard the road? Sounds like a weak air horn from a vehicle
There was a road not far off but I could tell where it was coming from and I don't think it was in the direction of the road

Animals make the craziest freaking noises. Ive heard elk sound like a grizzly bears, cats make some of the weirdest sounds I've ever heard. Owls will come up with some crazy shit. I had a cow moose grunting at me one time for 30 minutes and I could have swore it was Bigfoot. Hard saying what it was 🤷‍♂️

If you've ever had a screech owl let loose 20 feet above you in the dark, that is a life changing situation. Even if you didn't have a heart attack.

Had a whippoorwill go off about 10 ft. from me. Pitch black morning in the woods, dead still. Ft. Leonard Wood, MO , turkey hunting. The night before I had made the mistake of watching a documentary on MoMo , the Missouri Monster ( Missouri’s Bigfoot ). Gun went up in the air, turkey chair flew off in another direction, felt like I went up 6 feet at least…..I don’t know for sure, but I probably screamed. That was in 1976. I don’t think I’m quite right yet.
