When I was skinning coyotes the best 223 bullets that I found for saving hides was the 55gr Berger varmint and the speer 52gr HP’s the ones with the really big hallow point in the front. The BC on those 52’s kind of sucked but when I was calling 95% of the coyotes I shot were under 100 yards. The 52’s have been hands down my favourite bullet for saving hides in 223 and 22-250.Great thread. I'm just getting more into coyote hunting. I have an AR and santa brought me a tikka 223 20 inch t3x lite.
My AR hates anything lighter than a 68 grain bullet. So far, I have not been able to develop a lighter bullet load. I just picked up some 53 grain vmax and plan to have some varget behind it for the bolt action. I am trying to minimize pelt damage and vmax seems to get a lot of love.
The AR is an interesting problem. It's a S&W Volunteer with a 20 inch barrel. All I can think is a 55 grain bullet does not like that longer barrel for some reason (1:8). I know the twist rate is not ideal but plenty people have no issue with that twist. I'm looking for that 1moa or of the AR. I get it with the heavier bullets.
Good info, was just starting to look for some coyote bullets for my tikka 1:8 .223. Used a .204 for years to save pelts when market was good, I still like minimal damage if possible, I’ll give those 52s a whirl, bonus they are cheap! When I was skinning coyotes the best 223 bullets that I found for saving hides was the 55gr Berger varmint and the speer 52gr HP’s the ones with the really big hallow point in the front. That's great to hear. I shoot 68 hornady bthp out of my AR. Was wondering if those would expand quick enough to not blow out the other side. I think the vmax will be the ticket though if I can get them to fly consistently. When I was skinning coyotes the best 223 bullets that I found for saving hides was the 55gr Berger varmint and the speer 52gr HP’s the ones with the really big hallow point in the front.
