Like the title says... what vests etc do you all find to be the most comfortable for the blaze orange requirements... I hate wearing those dumb things (Understand why and appreciate that) but I find myself not wanting to wear my better clothing in gun season so I end up wearing blaze clothing and not have to deal with the vest... but then I don't get to use the fun outer clothing :)

I went to Walmart and bought a vest. I took another vest and cut a section out of it to pin to my pack.

Although I believe I read where some people said this wouldn't work in some states...

Nope
I wear fleece camo orange vest as part of my layering , I have found that out past 100 yards or so the orange over powers the black anyway so it looks solid orange at that distance,

Cheap as dirt, cheaply made flimsy blaze orange vests from Walmart or Sportsman's Warehouse. Nothing special, cheap and easily replaceable. One on my back, one on the pack and a spare in my pack.

I also own an orange Patagonia Micropuff jacket. I don't wear it while on the move but I do when I sit and glass or very first thing in the morning.

i use a frogg toggs. very basic and it rolls up and stores in it's own pocket. $12 on amazon. good for wrapping around your pack as well.

So it looks like the general consensus is the cheaper walmart style orange is the way to go... I have been using the heavier orange vests - thinking more like the upland hunting orange vests - they work, but I just get annoyed with another layer, and weird pockets etc.

I had started investing in orange outer layers to avoid this... but may start to go back to the cheap way so I don't have to have a duplicate of all my items.

I didn't think you were required to have orange on your pack in Utah? Is that just a personal choice?

Requirement to wear hunter orange
Utah Code § 23-20-31

If you’re hunting in an area where a centerfire rifle hunt is occurring, you must wear a minimum of 400 square inches of hunter orange material on your head, chest and back. A camouflage pattern in hunter orange meets this requirement; however, the Division strongly encourages hunters to continue using solid hunter orange whenever possible. There are some exceptions to the hunter orange rule. You’re not required to wear hunter orange if you’re participating in a bighorn sheep hunt, a bison hunt, a moose hunt or a mountain goat hunt—or a hunt that requires you to possess a statewide conservation permit or a statewide sportsman’s permit—unless a centerfire rifle hunt is in progress in the same area.

I guess it depends on how you interpret the law then. My vest is orange and it does cover my back but sometimes I have a pack over it. Technically my back still has orange. I've run into the DWR officers in the field like that and never had them make any comments but perhaps it just depends on which officers you get. I may have to reconsider.

I just started an orange vest company specifically to address some of the concerns outlined in this thread. I've made a mesh vest that is super light (2.2 ounces for a medium) and it's cut to fit well over Kuiu/Sitka-type clothing. I have a lot of money into my good hunting clothes and I don't want to drape some cotton thing (from Wal-mart) over it that will never dry. Most (all?) of the vests on the market right now are either cheapos from Wal-mart or really technical, big vests with lots of pockets from Cabela's, so I'm hoping my vest will fit in the middle for guys who have to wear orange but don't want to know they've got it on. :)

whuppinstick,

How about an orange ring that is some sort of combo of mesh and elastic to meet the hat requirements? Just ordered the Kuiu Boonie and plan to make something along these lines to slip over. Got the idea from someone that said they did it with a cowboy hat. Looked up the CO law and there is nothing on there that says that it has to be any size, just that there must be a head covering visible from all directions. Mesh is legal, but discouraged.
