Archery cow elk season ended at 5:35am today. I shot a nice one at 15 yards. Put the new backpack to the test and hauled out deboned in two trips. I tried to get it all in one trip but that was just too much. It was fun trying but age is becoming a beotch. First run ended up being two quarters, tenderloins and backstraps. The second was lighter with shoulders, neck and various cuts. You know your pack is too heavy when you have to put it on by laying on it and egg-rolling to your sticks. Bummer was I forgot to turn on the GoPro...had about 40 cows funnel through from 13-45 yards.

Pack did well. I added the lumbar pad and prefer it that way. Not sure what I was thinking trying to carry it all in one shot because that is too much weight.

I thought about going to friends in Panaca and enjoying a cold one...after being up at 2am and all the hoopla a 3 hour ride to my own bed was hard to beat. I'll start cutting tomorrow.

Congratulations ! Bittersweet for it to be over almost before it gets started. I find it's kind of a letdown when you have done all your homework and it all comes together right away.

It's okay I need to concentrate on my mule deer hunt in October.

Well done Kevin. I'm headed out Wednesday for my trophy cow hunt. I hope it goes that way for me as well. I'm doing the combo deer/elk on the same hunt.

Thats awesome.. I hope to see an elk next month when i go to colorado.. I didnt see one last year

Congrats! Can never complain about a quick success. Which pack do you have?
Used the Stone Glacier Solo.

Mark - I assume your kids are joining...have fun my friend. Let me know how it goes.

I'm going solo this year. My boys both started new jobs a few months ago and can't get time off.

I'll be in a familiar area that I've hunted off and on for the past 25 years. Hopefully the elk killing streak continues this year.
