Wow, sorry to hear that. That flat out sucks, but you have an address, and he has to cash the check under the name you provided, eh? Then there’s fake IDs and all that...shezus..the lengths sh*theads will go to steal things. I hope the digital posse here can help.

Between WTB scams and a story like this, it’s why I’m trying to sell face to face at a gun shop for the transfer. I’m the one with the merchandise, but I know the uneasy feeling of sending off a load of money and having the least bit of uncertainty isn’t great for a good night’s sleep. I’m just as concerned that in a digital transaction someone’s figured out a way to retract funds after they’ve got my stuff!

Get a photo copy of the check from the bank, find out who actually signed it and when. The bank will have footage of that check getting endorsed/and or cashed at the teller or drive thru.
Get the parent's names, validate son's name. See if he on facebook or ay other medium, work it.
Many avenues here even from a distance.

Don't give up.

Have you tried looking up the phone number you talked to him on? Might be able to figure out the owner of the phone if it's not a burner..

I'm sorry that happened.

Brewer, ME caught my attention. A scammer with a Brewer address PM'd me in response to my WTB post in February. He "apparently" had a Swaro STS 65. He was convincing, but a few things were red flags. His positive feedback was from a deleted account (same as your experience), and I couldn't find much of anything online for him. I ended up reporting it to Rokslide and he was removed from the website the same day.
I assume this is the same person.

In my dealings with him, here is the info he provided me:
Raymond Brown
207-578-3548
65 South Brewer Drive, Brewer, ME 04412

And his email address/zelle payment information was:
[email protected]

A google search of that email and his name turned up a pinterest account.

If I can be of any help to you or the police in finding this person, let me know.

I hope you and or the police can track this guy down and he gets what he deserves!! That’s a bunch of BS. These scammers are getting ridiculous! I’m getting to the point of only dealing with long term members especially on higher dollar transactions.

Thanks, I'll give this info to the PD in the police report, if you don't mind.

Something else to consider:

I always ask sellers to take my info (name, number, etc) write it on a piece of paper and take a new photo of the item I’m buying with that paper in the photo.

It doesn’t stop all scammers, but it stops the stock photo tricksters.

That's pretty good. Something to consider. Honestly, it's going to be HARD for me to get past this one and want to do business again like this.

On somewhat of a related note, I've been thinking for some time of what it would take to set up an 'escrow' service business. Somewhere a buyer could send the funds and the seller send the merchandise and the 'escrow' agent would then process the transaction. I know it would require some type of inventory management system, bonding, etc., but the bigger question is: what would folks be likely to pay for that service and could it be profitable? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes, the service is called "Guntab". (https://www.guntab.com)

I did one firearms transfer and it went really well. Best thing since PayPal does not offer payments for firearms.

I wish they would throw the book at people like this. I would hold out hope he can be tracked down based on having a physical address the money was sent to. If it turns out the police know who he is but don't do anything I would be tempted to drive to his house and see if his vehicle runs better with a bag of sugar in the gas tank.
Escrow.com. We've used it to buy and sell domain names for $50,000.

Wondering would using paypal have prevented this? Sorry to the OP, let us know if you catch him!
Possibly. No against policy buying...with fees....and he had a legit acct tied to a funding source that had funds for them to reverse the funds....lots of ifs

Snipers hide has some threads on this.

the son is a suspect but it could also be a random that knows the folks that live there are older and don’t collect their mail as soon as it’s delivered. Tracking makes it easy for someone to watch the mailbox the right day and intercept your envelope on delivery.

good luck!

Yes, I agree that anyone could have snatched the package. I wasn't even able to send him the tracking until after it arrived. The check was delivered second day, and I wasn't able to call the bank in time to get tracking before it delivered. Either way, yes, it could be anyone. Again, I'm no detective, I'm just speculating. I'm hoping the actual detectives follow through on this....

Like the OP, it'd be great to hear if anyone has actual experience with GunTab, cuz it sure looks like the way to go for long distance, classifieds firearms sales.

I have had one excellent experience on GunTab.

Every other firearm transaction I have done has been a money order, personal check, or PayPal. Kinda feeling lucky that I have never been burned.
