Let’s see all the weird and crazy elk racks you guys have harvested. I’ve only been able to go on one bull hunt, (lived in New Mexico for a few years and only drew one bull tag) but the bull I harvested was pretty unique.
I've got two weirdos, the larger one we thought just broke off when he slammed into a tree. We looked for the broken side for 5 minutes before we walked back down and realized it wasn't actually broke off.
A lot of the deformaties I see are caused by them breaking a pedicel when they are very young. One spring we had three bulls in the field that had a developing six point going up on one side and a 2-3 point with clubs growing down on the other side.
My son killed one of them the next year but I have never been so lucky.
A 5x2 bull I shot several years ago. The antlers were not damaged in the rut and nothing was broken off. It had to be something genetic. I saw a bull that was a year or two older than this one that had the exact same antler configuration on the same mountain a couple years after I shot this guy. Pretty cool.
My buddy Mark shot this bull several years ago near where we live. He's a 6 point but as you can see the left antler grows out of the skull more in the front. We assume that the bull broke his skull sometime earlier in his lifetime. Amazing that he lived and continued on like nothing happened. My dads Missouri Breaks bull had devil tines on top of his brow tines on both sides. Not super uncommon, but still pretty neat.
