Hey all,

Have any of you had Vanguards with which you struggled to group well? By that I mean 5 shot groups in 1.5" or so. Not the "3 shot sub MOA" guarantee etc etc

If so, has free floating the barrel channel of the factory Weatherby stock helped much?

The price point on the Obsidians is tempting but thinking of a couple Vanguards I've owned in the past, wondering if that was the case.

I have a WBY Obsidian in .223 Rem. I modified the magbox and can load 80gr ELDM's out to 2.495" and it shoots those sub moa for three shots. I shot it out to 1k with that load. I've also gone out to 1230 yards but couldn't see misses or hear hits at that distance. Winter so too wet for dust signatures and too windy to hear hits. I'm pleased with mine and plan on bedding it sometime in the future. It hasn't been even free floated yet.

Great shooting!

Did you just take a file to the mag block in the back of the magazine?

Curious as to what that translates into with the 5 shot + groups to be able to do that well at range

The rear of the mag just has a sliding L shaped plate that slides in and out. I measure to the lands with the 80gr ELDM and then cut a groove to slide the L shaped block to length with a dremel cutting wheel. But that wasn't a good way to do it. I'd suggest marking it with tape, I used my dial calipers to scratch a mark, and use a fine hacksaw blade to cut. I also thought of making a block with JB Weld and clay with a good release agent so I could slide it in and out.

Right or wrong I don't get caught up with 5, 10 or whatever shot groups. I tend to load 5 for each weight charge during load development and shoot 3 rounds for group and the last two out to distance. Especially with my Obsidian because I'll have to test for accuracy again once I FF and bed it.

Thanks for the description of the mag conversion.

Hey if its hitting the things you want and need to hit, can't argue with results
