Frustrated with Weatherby

Ive tried 55gr hornady factory ammo (I’ll admit not premium match stuff) and it did about 3” on a 3 shot group. But hey, hopefully I’m wrong and they shoot great!

Maybe it likes ammo in the 30-50gr range.

I wouldn’t waste more time or money on the current barrel. Rifles that are that picky have something going on. I’d either sell it or probably better yet, put a new barrel on it.

That’s such a bummer. This gun, in addition to being a cheap range trainer, was a Weatherby audition cause some of their MKV models look awesome. I’ll be 1 and done with Weatherby

Is it a Vanguard model since you mentioned cheap trainer?

The new barrel recommendations really surprise me. More than likely that thing can be taken care of for around $20 and an evening of tinkering.

I pity anyone working in the “accuracy guarantee” dept of any company. Seeing the average shooter at the range not even know what action screws are, cheap scope holding on for dear life by Amazon-special rings and bases tightened down with the provided Allen key, shooting off elbows and a fully extended bipod through a wicked flinch… then proceed to bash the brand for not being a surgical instrument. I completely understand the $200 fee for the wasted time. Just a bummer it’s half the cost of the gun for those who actually do it right and get a lemon.

I used to be a major Weatherby homer. Then I discovered Tikkas.

I still have a Vanguard Back Country, the original stainless version, .30-06. One of my best shooters.

I’m definitely going to take the action tightening procedure from the other thread posted on page 1 here and see if that changes anything. Also ordered all 3 of their test rounds to try. Hopefully it shoots something well and I can sell it with a clean conscience, but I was hoping to get at least to a 69gr bullet with this gun.

Did you swap the scope with a known good scope.

What's your bench set up and typical ability expectations from the bench. I'm guessing. 5moa or better by the sounds of things.

If all is tight and the scope is proven I suspect a bad barrel or horrible lock time in the fire control mechanism.

Before spending any money on it I would sell it and advertise it as a 1.5 3 shot moa with x ammo.

Take a little loss and move on. It's not worth dumping money into improvement. Its definitely not worth shipping $$ plus $200 for weebee to proof it.

They didn't have the exact model A7 in my chambering any where state side so they sent me a similar model 85 (flagship model).

I have not swapped scopes, but I could give that a try. This was a new scope purchased for this gun so I guess I don’t have any proof it’s doing its job.

From the bench I either shoot front and rear bags or bipod and rear bag. With all other rifles I can definitely get .5 moa 3 shot groups, but typically shoot 5 minimum and 10 preferred. Those rifles (and the loads I’ve developed for them) can hold sub MOA for 10 shots with me behind the trigger. I am not a crazy talented shot, but good enough to throw a decent group.

I’ll retorque everything per the other thread and shoot the ammo I’ve been shooting to have a direct comparison to baseline. Then I’ll try their test ammo. If no good I’ll swap scopes and try their test ammo. Probably won’t get to the range until next weekend, but I’ll update results as I get them.

Yes, it’s true, I didn’t go to the range for 7 months…. lol
Finally got out to the range to test Weatherby’s test ammo (2 of 3, couldn’t find the ballistic silvertip option).
Results were weird, and still not acceptable.
Shot (2) 3-shot groups with each (55gr NBT, 55gr TSX), fired back to back with each type (6 shots total before cooling).

BT provided 3.097” with the first group, and 1.788” with the second
TSX provided 3.968” with the first, and 1.416” with the second.

I thought it was weird that shots 4-6 were consistently far better. On top of that, with both groups shots 4 and 5 were within 0.5”, and the third (shot 6) would fly.

Will swap a trusty, known scope next and retry both types of ammo
