Weatherby Mark V weight reduction

Greetings,

I have a beloved Weatherby Mark V chambered in 300 Weatherby Mag. She's done good but now after doing high bear and buck hunts in Western Washington, I need to make it lighter. She comes in at a whopping 12.6lbs empty. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There are some options, but depending on how light you want it you can quickly start coming up to an inflection point where buying new lightweight parts (stock, scope, rings, etc) or having a gunsmith shave weight off in different ways through material removal, just starts becoming more expensive than buying a new lightweight Weatherby. Easiest first-step though would probably be to find carbon-fiber stock. IIRC, Weatherby has a factory option from Peak 44 stocks that are lightweight, carbon fiber.

I am in the same boat, mkv accumark, with just a scope mounted (with leupold backcountry rings) it comes in right around 13lbs. I am having trouble with accuracy and am debating whether or not it's worth it to rebarrel with a new stock or just buy something else.

Is the action worth spending the money on it?

I like the Mark V action and am in the process of having mine re-barreled. To me it’s worth spending money on but others opinions may vary. I wore out the barrel and already had it in a McMillan Gamewarden so the decision was easy for me. I could have gone carbon to make it a tad lighter but I liked it being a bit heavy to absorb some of the recoil for this particular rifle. It is getting a Bartlein 3B with flutes. The barrel will be very close to the factory contour. I have lighter rifles for packing around if that’s what is needed.

OP- it may be easier/ cheaper to get a lighter rifle than to put your Accumark on a diet. The 9 lug is a pretty heavy action to start with. A new barrel and light stock I’m guessing will put you at least $1600 (probably a bit more).

How certain are you that it's a barrel issue? Asking, because in general, accuracy issues related to the gun generally seem to be related to improperly torqued fasteners, improperly mounted scopes, and the scopes themselves losing zero. Things can get loose, quickly with heavy-recoiling cartridges.

I’ve torqued everything per the recommended specs and lapped the rings. I’ve been meticulous about hand loads, weight sorting everything, use a bushing die with expander mandrel, swapped and adjusted variables one at time trying to find the best load. I’m kind of at a loss and it’s an old gun with an unknown amount of rounds through it. I can safely say I have put 300-400 through it.

Before rebarreling, I'd definitely swap out the scope with one you know is solid, just to try to further isolate the issue.

The scope has been swapped, it’s a 7rem mag.

Sounds like you've narrowed it down pretty well. Any dings in the crown? Only other thing that comes to mind is ensuring the scope base itself is still torqued down properly. It's surprising how often their fasteners will come loose.

They’re ring mounts, so they attach directly to the receiver. The crown appears to be fine.
