Waypoint 2020 light primer strikes

Did anyone try fighting the set screws without taking the firing pin out?

It'd be a good thing to check and tighten the screws before it becomes an issue. One needs to remove the firing pin from the bolt to be able to tighten it down to fix the issue once it's started. I believe the recoil from the firing just makes it start working its way free. Maybe if the spring was coiled the other direction it'd work it's way tighter if it were to come loose?

Hello Chat,

I just spoke with a rep at Springfield. They have never heard of this issue. I shared this post with them in hope they solve it in the future.

I want to say, great job for solving this issue on you own and sharing it. Greatly appreciated.

In my defense I had taken it to a gunsmith but it was going to take 6-8 weeks before they could have a look at it. So I decided I'd see what I could find first. My first attempt failed and it was only after trying multiple things that I got it to work again.

I have a brand new waypoint sitting on the bench. Getting ready to start load development. Shall find out if its a on going issue.

I like it and if I can get better than minute of critter or better, ill be happy. Test loads ready and waiting.

Having this issue with my .308 Waypoint today. Started after 100 rounds or so.

Thanks for sharing the information.
I ended up having to do the fix quite often on mine. That being said, I’m stupid and never did put any sort of thread locker on the set screws, which probably would have helped. I was using the rifle in NRL matches, and it failed on me too many times and lost me points. I have since gotten rid of the rifle and just had a custom one built. So maybe try some sort of non permanent thread locker so it doesn’t keep happening.

No light strikes on my Waypoint🤞 but I did have the downward facing set screw back out and nearly lock the action closed. That was a fun issue at the time. Ended up scraping the tail end of the action as I yoinked it out. Replaced mine with one of these set screws from Ace hardware: 6-40x3/16"

Even my Redline (same action) screw was not tight out of the box. Definitely check those screws and loctite.

Circling back around to this. Started getting light primer strikes out of the blue. Probably around 400 rounds in. First time, the firing pin was about 3/4 turn out. Threaded back in and she was running perfect again until today, two sessions later. Started the session strong then got a light strike after about 25 rounds. Shrugged it off and continued. It progressively got worse to the point I just called it a day.

Back at the house, I pulled the firing pin again. She was almost 2 full turns out, which explains the progression. Both set screws backed off. I screwed the firing pin back in, cleaned and blue loctited the set screws, giving them a GOOD snug. Hopefully this helps longer term.

BTW, I don't remember seeing it here, but to pull the firing pin from the bolt, you push the shroud down (stand the bolt on the face and push down) then slide the bolt handle further into the bolt, releasing the lock on the firing pin assembly. Made a lil video.
