I been packing a Katadyn pump for awhile , it needs a new filter and they are expensive. Whats your go to water set up id like to move on from the pump style

Buy the new filter. Better than getting the heebie-jeebies.

I always bring hydrapaks so looking into maybe a squeeze type or something , most places in the sierra’s has creeks/streams i can scoop water

I use the same katadyn hiker that I’ve used for years. Weighs a bit less than a half liter bottle. It’s not the smallest or the lightest but it has proven itself to be reliable so that’s my go to.

Gravity bag. I have tried most options and I prefer the gravity bag design. I can multi task and do something else while it does the work. And I always end up with way more water than I am willing to pump.

I’ve been on trips where I have relied on other peoples’ lightweight systems and elected to not bring mine and they have failed. To me it is well worth the weight penalty to know that I’m going to have water.

I used to use a Katadyn, now I am all about gravity filters. They are efficient and take no effort. You literally dip a bag in water, hook it up to the clean bag and walk away for a few min and like magic you have drinkable water.

This is especially nice in an environment with a lot of mosquitoes, try pumping next to a creek for 20 minutes while getting eaten alive, you will immediately see how nice gravity filters are.

Downside is it’s annoying to sit and wait if you stop to grab some water and continue in.

I use a sawyer and a steri pen. Mainly use the filter just to make the water pretty. I trust the steri pen more. I also carry the pills as a back up if things go wrong. The weight penalty on all of this is minimal. Ive drank out of literal swamps and been fine.

Katadyn “be free” gravity filter is what I use. It gets it done. Likely not as fast as pump. You can also use it to hold dirty water until you have room if you are staying in a specific spot for multiple days.

Hydrapak has a screw in filter that works pretty well. I use one on my 3L bag with zero issues. Works as a dirty water bag, squeeze bag, or a gravity bag. It rolls up and take up very little space when not used.

I use the Sawyer squeeze for backpacking. They fit on a smart water bottle for easy water collection and drinking and also come with plastic bags for filtering larger amounts of water.

I've been using the Grayl water bottle and so far its been super quick and convenient. It's similar to a French press I guess if you think about it. Just fill the cup then insert the filter section and press down. Filters everything that other filters can but it also filters viruses, which the typical hollow fiber filters like sawyers cannot.

I usually carry 6 liters worth of empty soft water bladders and can have those all filled within a couple minutes with filtered water if water will be scarce further into my hunt. If there are a ton of mosquitoes by the water I'll just quickly fill my bladders with dirty water and filter the water as I need it. Mine is the smaller 16 oz version, but within seconds after filling with dirty water I have drinkable water.

Not having to wait for a gravity filter is nice. Unless your hunting partner has one then it's a moot point cuz you're waiting on his ass anyways 😂

Started using a Platypus GravityWorks system about 13 years ago. It’s a great way to go when you’re setting up anywhere near a water source. Not the most efficient to pack along daily. Much more efficient than a pump filter.

Started using a rechargeable Steripen in 2019 or so, I now use it for the vast majority of my water purification needs. It’s easy to carry along in my belt pouch so I can fill up my Nalgene anywhere along the way throughout the day.

I’ll typically also carry a Platypus 2L soft bottle or MSR Dromedary bag along with me in case I need to fill up more than 1L at a time. Also, it doesn’t hurt to carry some aqua tabs along as a fail safe in case things break.

My system for water purification is generally tailored around the type of hunt I’m doing and the general availability of water in the area.
