Water storage when Truck Camping

My truck camping water storage bags sprung a leak this weekend. I’m thinking about getting a hard sided container for the added durability. Anyone have a recommendation for what they use? So far I’ve found the common aqua-tainer jugs, but reviews talk about the faucet leaking.

I have a cheap blue Coleman. The valve got brittle from use hunting birds in the winter. I bet I could just replace that part. It did last 4 years or so. I had the bag style before and they always seem to spring a leak in a season or two.

I use Reliance Aquatainers and a 5gal Ozark Trail (Walmart) roto molded insulated water cooler. I've been through several broken spigots with Aquatainers and some leakage issues so now only use them to refill the Ozark Trail, which has been fantastic for the 75 bucks it cost.

We have been using these for the last 5 years. We usually take 1 of these 10 gallon ones and then a 5 gallon version as well for 2 of us for a 10 day trip. They help somewhat from keeping the water from freezing but they will eventually freeze up after a few days of extreme cold.

Five to six cases of 40-bottle Arrowhead Spring Water will normally last me through archery season. That way I also know how much water I'm going through every day. I average about 10 bottles a day = 169oz.

During archery it normally doesn't get cold enough to freeze the bottles, and if it does it's generally warm enough during the day to melt them. But I keep a couple cases in a cooler just in case. And I always fill up my bladder the night before, and fill my coffee pot as well in case it freezes at night. Gotta have hot coffee in the morning.

I have several of the Aqua-tainers and have never had a problem with them, just leave the valve inverted until ready to use. I also will line the bottom of my coolers with frozen water bottles, they stay frozen for a couple weeks and if needed I can pull some out and thaw them.

After beating up and destroying the various plastic water cans (aqua tainer im looking at you) by crushing them with cargo straps and heavy gear and dropping them, etc etc. I've gone to the NATO blue metal cans with food liner on the inside. These are bomb proof for me and I'm not going back to plastic water jug things for the way i seem to abuse everything.

I've used the cheap Wal-Mart one with success.

I drilled two small holes in the handle for air to get in to make pouring faster.

I've also used the Rotopax with success if you're wanting something more durable.

I don't like the waste of plastic water bottles, just seems unnecessary and a PITA to me.

I don't like the waste of plastic water bottles, just seems unnecessary and a PITA to me.

They go in a bag and then in the recycling bin when I get home.

You would think that that water container would have been made with an air hole and snapping closure. I have a heavy duty thick plastic 6gal container that I've had for probably 30 years. It works great if I want to take extra water.

I have a few of the scepter water jugs and they are real tough. Kinda pricey but cry once.

I used to use the cheap blue ones but they had problems standing up to the bouncing around in the truck and trailer on the forest service roads and would deform. To their credit they didn't burst open but I can't see them holding up over more then a couple of trips.

I use an aquatainer jug but the reviews were correct and the spigot does leak. I unthreaded the leaking spigot and replaced it with a plastic garden hose spigot from the hardware store, same threads and I think it was about $5. I do like the size and shape of the container since it doesn’t tip over easily.

My father in law uses one of these for himself and his dogs when hunting. Just make sure to smell it first and check for red dye. (Please don’t do this).

They used to sell those in white specifically for water. I bought a couple off Amazon a number of years ago for dog water when hunting.

Same concept here. I throw a 32 pack of Aquafina into the truck. $5 and very versatile.

I've switched to Scepter's a couple years ago after others either leaked or broke. Was tired of the crap made in China.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Sounds like I either have to gamble with an economics container or pay for quality.
