Water Filters...

That's odd, I just bought a Sawyer squeeze filer and a couple of platy bags and it seems the threads are different. The Sawyer looks like a standard water bottle, but the platypus bags only have one thread. When I tried to connect the two it felt like I was going to destroy the threads.

I ended up purchasing another platypus hoser and I'll use it with the filter spliced in as a dirty bag.

I'm not recommending....

Id never suggest not filters. Only takes once! Sawyer here also. I hate pumping.

.....no filter....on the contrary, I almost always have one with me. Just saying, that in 42 years of backcountry backpacking, hunting I have never been sick from drinking the water I do. Again, you have to KNOW that its coming out of a mtn with no livestock, campsites, swampy wallows, etc above it- and its good, if I'm not sure, I pump or add the tablets.

I'm not a fan of the sawyer, mine clogged fairly quickly and only help I got from CC was to soak it in vinegar. That didn't help at all. I'm running the platypus gravity system and it's wicked fast and easy. A couple tips, I have learned with this type of system is to keep air out of the filter. If you get any in the filter it will slow up tremendously. A trick I use now is to fill the dirty hose before attaching the filter. Next, let the clean tube fill with water. Then, blow the clean water back up into the filter to get the air out of it. Don't stop blowing until the air bubbles up the dirty bag. I shorten my dirty tube to reduce this, make the removal of air easier, and add to the head pressure. Once you figure out the gravity system you'll never go back to pumping water.

Mine is in line on barbs so I've never tried to screw it on . I'm using big zips so there's nothing to screw to.

Eltaco your issue is your rubber seal inside the sawyer isnt seated correctly. I took mine out to check what you where saying and my seal was raised a bit out of place on side. Once I seated the rubber seal it screws right on. Some Photos.

Here is the Rubber seal raised on one side. common for them

I took a screw driver and gently pushed it into place

Screws right on the Sawyer

That makes more sense Beendare. I still always caution on the safe side of things. Ive never been sick but I had a friend of mine I was backpacking with and we where at a lake at 9500 elevation. He drank from it within 12 hours he was having cramps, the craps, and we ended up heading back early. I offered to filter water for him too, he was eating crow after that. Ive always been cautious since seeing him get sick. I think we stopped 5 times along the trail on the way down. Wasnt pretty. Sometimes learning from others mistakes is a good learning experience. =-)

A few things I've found about the sawyer squeeze. One the white rubber washer they have installed sucks, I replaced mine with a standard 5/8 red rubber hose washer. The red ones are a stiffer rubber but still soft enough for a good seal without over compressing and ripping, like the ones sawyer uses, the opening is much bigger On the red washer too increasing flow. Also the threads on The sawyer are the same as the threads on smart water bottles. So those are the water bottles I use In my pack. Gives me the option of screwing right to the bottle should I need to. I posted up a pretty good system I came up with for filling mine. It's on here somewhere but my laptops at work and it's harder to search and attach stuff from my phone. When I get a chance I'll do that though.

Thanks, I'd like to see that. I don't care for the platy bag attachment to the Sawyer. I think it could work but I believe the threads are slightly different diameter, they don't get a very good engagement.

Right now, I plan to just have two platypus hoser systems, one will be dirty with the filter spliced onto a short hose, and quick connect to feed directly into my clean bladder hose. Should work out just fine and save me a lot of weight over the pump setup I used last year.

Nope only when I fill my 3/liter with water. Other guys just drink the dirty water from their bags with an inline filter. Both are much more efficient.
