New guy here and I am looking into getting another filter and came across the Gravityworks from Platypus. I had an old Katadyn that needs replaced and I wondered if anyone was using this system and what their thoughts and/or impressions were? They look quite simple and I'm really liking the no pumping option as well as the lighter weight.

I'm not using that filter but myself and many others are using the Sawyer line of inline or gravity filters.

I just ordered the Sawyer squeeze filter and a couple of platypus hoser bags and fittings. I'm trying to streamline my whole system and expect that I'll save about 11oz as compared to my old bladder and pump. Still not exactly sure if I'll run it inline or squeeze it in, but I'll try both methods to dial it in before season.

You can find the Sawyer at Wal-Mart for $30

Sawyer. Ultra light, mine came with three bags, screws on any regular sized empty water bottle, easy to clean and filters like a million gallons.

I have the platypus system and I really like it, especially if its used as a community filter between 2-4 people with the standard 4L dirty/clean water bags. For a solo hunter, I would go with something like the sawyer IMO. The only negative I have with the platypus is that the dirty bag can be a pain to seal and frequent back flushing becomes critical after a few seasons of use.

We will have four of us in camp in WY this year. For convenience, I just picked up a sawyer 4L bag gravity filter. Moontrail had them on sale.

I only pump water about 1/2 the time- if you get your water from the right spot, no camps/ livestock upstream its better than from your tap. Lots of springs coming right out of the mtn in the Rockies...best water there is. I do use a Pur hiker and also carry the tablets as backup if I have to pump from a pot I don't know whats above it. My horseback buddies like that sawyer gravity filter for camp.

I run a sawyer inline just above the bite valve and a 3L platypus big zip dirty. I can pop the bite valve off and fill my cooking pot in a jiffy and I just scoop and go at a water source. I haven't been anywhere that I had really dirty water to work with so I haven't had to back flush it very often. You have to protect the sawyer from freezing so I tuck the bite valve and sawyer into my jacket. You have to fish it out of the jacket to drink but I'm not guzzling water when freezing the filter is a problem.

Going with sawyer mini this season myself. Already have a ton of platypus bags. Going to cut some weight off the water kit for sure.

I love gravity feed filters. Previously I had the Sawyer filter, then this year switch to the platypus since it was about half the weight. Squeeze filters are a pain in the ass, and with a gravity systems you can be filtering water while you set up camp, prepare food, etc. It does about 1L per minute and is super easy.

Hey Charv you can use the Sawyer Squeeze as a gravity fed filter also.

That is the sawyer squeeze filter in my setup there. I get about the same 1l a minute as I can fill 3 liters in around 3 minutes.

Can the sawyer mini or the sawyer squeeze be connected to the threaded top on a plati 2L? I assume it can even with a simple adapter. It sounds like all I need to do is mark one plati bag as dirty and hook the 2 together. Is it really that simple? I have the Hiker Pro, but I seldom use it because I don't like taking the time to deal with it.

Hey Toad. Yep I have the same bag that came with my Kifaru Xing the Squeeze fits right on it. Its a standard bottle opening. Id recommend though you keep the filter farther down the line then right at the opening of your dirty bladder. As youll get a faster flow rate if you have a foot or more line from the dirty. Farther down the filter is closer to the clean the faster and more efficiently it works. I owe Luke Moffatt for that bit of advice it has helped speed things up for me.
