Water Enhancement ~ Flavors ~ Brands

NUUN tablets with or without caffeine
Crystal Lite packets w/caffeine
Walmart packets w/lots o caffeine
Gatorade ZERO, no caffeine

I used to drink lots of the big tub Gatorade sugar mix as an uneducated hydration solution for long daily bikerides. Take a look at the label and realize how much sugar is in it - enough to change your A1C levels - take it from me.

Does one need that much added salt? I rarely salt anything and drink plan water.
This trip out west we are taking in August will be daily hikes 5 to 10 miles. GF used to buy the LMNT brand until she started feeling bloated from the large amount of salt.

What about the sugar? I really try to stay away from it as well as hard as it is to do.

The Keppi and W.A. have my interest so far.

My family has a long history of heart problems at young ages. Grew up in a “don’t salt anything” family.

Never had used any supplements for sodium until a couple weeks ago. I did a lop and scatter. It’s physical work running chainsaws and piling up trees. I have done it for six years in a row. Every year after lunch, it’s always been a drag to get going and stay going for the remaining 3 hours. Tried one of the relyte packets and I can say that I felt a million times better this last time. It was very noticeable.

Wouldn’t use it while sitting at my desk but it will be in my pack for the more physically demanding hunts this year.

If I'm real active... Yes. I feel much better.

I'll have one, MAYBE two on high exertion days in the heat.

Salt is the most misunderstood thing in the gen pop. nutrition wise. More so than protein, fat, carbs even.

The FDA standard is 4-5x lower than what a moderately active person should be consuming, let alone an athlete getting after it.

Crazy how much of a difference it makes. Tsp of salt, 10g creatine, and some maltodextrin to push it where it needs to go is the secret sauce for PRs in the gym

On my regular blood tests my sodium is always on the low side. I also am susceptible to night calf cramps is even slightly dehydrated. I take 2 doeses of water relyte a day plus 2 salt tablets one in AM one in PM. This stops the cramps unless I do something stupid like drink a bunch of alcohol. I do an hour of cardio a day and do sweat a bit the 10.5 months a year its hot in TX.

Lmnt, I drink 2 a day in the off season training year round and will drink 3-4 a day in the back country. Sooo many guys don’t get enough salt in their daily diet imo.

Make a huge difference on compound lifts and rucking when properly hydrated. I just order once a year from them on the Black Friday deals with a military discount. Money well spent imo. My kids even love the flavors, no sugars is a huge benefit as well.

Exactly. Severe heat stress, twice, over 15 years ago has me extremely susceptible to dehydration and its symptoms. It has happened to lesser degrees since then until I really started to listen to and learn my new reality.

For me, the symptoms (cramps, headaches, nausea, exhaustion) of too little water and electrolyte have been magnified since those two primary events.

Thermotabs are my choice for electrolyte tablets. Start my day with two, have at least one Re-Lyte throughout the day and add more Re-Lyte and tabs as necessary based on physical output.

*Sorry to derail the OP. I would go ahead and grab a sample pack of a few different brands of electrolyte mix and figure out your flavor preferences.

My opinion, don’t be afraid of salt especially if you are exerting yourselves.

We use Walmart brand lemonade drink enhancer, no caffeine, has vitamins in it also. it comes in different flavors also. I also use sodium free Amazon electrolyte drink powder.

When your family likes to fall over dead in their late 30s to early 40s fairly consistently and the doctors tell you to cut out sodium, you kind of don’t have much of a choice. This would have all been advice from the 90s to early early 2000s so I am sure the research and understanding has widely changed.

When you spend most of your life not salting things, it’s hard to start. I just don’t like the taste of most stuff salted. I do salt things more now than I have in the past. The quickest way to ruin popcorn is to salt it.

I drive a desk for 40 a week and am not much for working out but I will definitely get some sodium supplements for when I start hiking more again. It was amazing the difference I felt. I would advise anyone that hasn’t tried it, to try it at least once.

Glad I asked, very good discussion. Along with the benefits , still want something that the taste is very good ,so the kids don’t tell me it tastes weird and miss the benefits of staying hydrated.
