Was leaving the hunt worth it?

I’ve been Elk hunting five times In my life. Twice just went along on someone else’s tag. And those five times I’ve collected one bull, Almost got a shot another one,. I have worn my ass out walking sitting scrambling and spent many days doing that without seeing so much as a cow. Two of these hunts were dropped camps. The rest completely DIY. So with all that I’m pretty sure I have spent well over $10,000 trying to get an elk.

under the circumstances there’s no way I’m walking away. I’ll do my best to shoot an elk because that’s what I came for. If I have to butcher and help the cook pack out that elk I’ll do that too. Then I’ll rip the outfitter a new A-hole and Ask for much of my money back… say Drop camp rate. Most people who really love hunting have just busted their asses to see some elk. You’re not gonna get any sympathy from those people over the menu, or the quality of the help.

Edit:. I thought I was done but then I found myself walking around the kitchen muttering to myself. It sounds like the experience the OP wanted and was advertised was not delivered, So nobody is gonna say yeah you should be $10,000 for that. But this is the wrong forum to be looking for a lot of support for the way you handle this. The form is mostly about DIY and backcountry hunting. Hard men doing hard things so they can get some meat and some little pieces of bone and get elk or deer or goat stink all over them. And dank memes. Mostly dank memes. OK I think I’m happy now…

Edit: I thought I was done but I’m not. This is like one of those arguments where you keep walking back in the room and saying “and another thing!” Life is about experience. Sometimes you pay too much for those experiences, and sometimes they fall in your lap for free or not very much. But I just can’t wrap my head around walking away from elk. OK I may be done this Time….

Nothing like cutting off your nose to spite your face...

Never know, maybe the outfit is really top notch and just had a wreck of some sort going on you didn't know about.

To leave a hunt like that where action is all around...because you weren't be cattered to enough???? I guess....

Seems like million other options...then again idk...

OP. Your money, time, hunt, your decision. No right or wrong on this one for me to judge,

On another note, if the Guide had brought in a loaf of bread, so you could have had a ramen hot dog or taco.. hard to walk away from that..

Rokslide logic......

Spend $800 on a pack "it better be f****** perfect, this webbing strap is 1/4" too low"

Spend $10,000 on a guided elk hunt "you should be happy you had dirt to sleep on cuz elk man"
I don’t think I’d be happy but I’m damn sure not leaving bugling bulls! No way, no how. Talk to the owner, ask for compensation, continue the hunt.

I would genuinely be concerned with the meat care after a kill, and whatever preparations need to be done for taxidermy in the field. If the guide/foodlesscook didn't know how to hunt, he probably doesn't know what to do after a hunt.
I think you should be concerned with the kill. 😂

I make pretty good money (or I though so) and there is NO WAY I could afford a 15-20K hunt. lol

Not a chance. And even if there was a chance, I still wouldn't pay it.

I have walls full of animals that just cost me a tag and gas money. They may not be Booners but I can live with that. lol
That was me yesterday asking about utv when everyone was telling me to go drop 20-30k on a new one because a used one could be abused. I mean shit, my wife and I both make good money, or at least I thought, but no way in hell I’m dropped 25k on a stupid side by side!!

For 25K, you could build one hell of an off road vehicle and have AC and way less dust.

If you could just drop the GPS coordinates for that camp in this thread, we’ll get everything squared away with the outfitter and fill that tag for you…

It’s a shame the outfitter didn’t get in front of it. He could have alerted you to the fact that he wasn’t going to be able to provide the same level of service, packed in some decent freeze dried meals and knock a decent chunk of money off the hunt without you asking for it. Then let you decide if that’s the hunt you want to go on. Problem solved. I don’t have very high standards for food while I’m hunting but I’m fairly certain I’d die if all I ate was top ramen while hiking around in the mountains for a week. For $10k, I’d expect the outfitter to have their shit wired tight and good food.

Not sure I would have left though.
