Wanted an elk hunting experience - got a dream hunt the 1 afternoon hunted.

Happy to be driving home after being covered in elk on day 1? Over ramen noodles? Leaving something out for sure...

Imagine the story telling the next day when the older guys show up and are escorted to the elk. Yup, the guy left cause Bobby gave him Ramen Noodles! yuk-yuk-yuk! Nice shot on that elk Norm! I thought it would never shut up.

Haha, I’m fine with leaving with no meat. That’s now hunting anyhow, the “guides” complaining before hand may have helped in my decision, as I said, I had asked him to stop bashing the owner and let’s hunt. Anyhow, I see this sets me up as a whining lil b$&:h, but that’s not how I see it. Had I paid less and expected less, it would have been great!! I just didn’t want a “reduced rate” as that’s what the guide had already mentioned happens and the fact he rode 2 hrs in the dark to bring 3 of us 1 pack of Ramon each at 11pm. Now if you’re ready for that and go into a hunt for that, that’s fine and great. Maybe a burger and a sandwich for lunch the next day and I’d had stayed..but not 1 Ramon noodle pack and a few cookies and 2 granola bars for the sack lunch the next day…I been booked with him for a year prior…

Heck, I eat ramen at home with a sandwich for lunch several times a month. I like it. Well, I should say I like ramen that I like. Not all ramen is created equal.

For almost $10k, I'd expect a magnificent lodge with fantastic meals, a hot tub, and massages from a young female Swedish massage therapist every night.......in addition to screaming bulls every time out.

That's a shit spot to be put into, no question about that!!!! I guess it's hard for me to understand as I have always DIY hunted. But for $9k I better be living the good life in addition to good elk hunting!!!! I also know I've left for a 7 day hunt with enough food for a little extra and killed my bull on day 9, ya I was hungry but we had bulls screaming all day long and I wasn't walking away. Most of the guys I've ever hunted with would never walk away from screaming bulls cause they had to eat shitty food Bottom line as long as you were good with leaving then I guess it was the right choice for you. Tntrkr you stated your “expectations, seeing, hearing and stalking elk, that happened, you also wanted to experience a backcountry camp, that also happened, maybe not as it should have been but you were there. OK, the food was crap, the guide seemed to get you on the elk and there was lots of them. You should have had a serious conversation with the outfitter when he was there and arranged for some type of partial refund or compensation. You could have taken part of a day and gone to town for food, then came back to set up as much camp as you needed for yourselves, then went and found your elk. YOU chose to leave with a refund, now you want to vent, maybe you should consider DIY or don’t hunt western states.
I’ve known a few outfitters, enough to know crap happens, but also know that their camps are up and ready we’ll before season barring regulations or weather. Now I’m not saying what the OP has said happened didn’t happen but something just doesn’t add up, and now it’s crickets. I would like to know who the outfitter is, did a report get filed with the MT. Guide Assoc.?

Sorry BFR for not replying as soon as you expected to questions, as I said, I’m still heading East and I posted that right before going to bed in a hotel. I’m up and about to drive some more so I’ll answer any question when I get to it after the trip. No, I haven’t reported him, I haven’t done anything other than drive! I know crap happens but don’t bring me 1 pack (each) of Ramon at 11pm and expect me to not be upset! Maybe he thought I’d have a kill the 1st evening, as I almost did, and be gone before he had to feed me.. I agree something wasn’t adding up, that’s why I left. I’m not on here bashing the outfit publicly, just bashing his choice to ride 2 hrs in the dark to bring me shit for supper, breakfast, and lunch the next day…

Wow... all I can say is I'm glad you didn't take one of our elk home with you. Next time you think you want to try elk hunting just remember that having a good dinner is more important to you than elk hunting and spend your time and money at an all inclusive beach resort.

I understand pulling the pin on the hunt. I suspect I may have tried to negotiate a new reduced rate and continued hunting, but I also completely understand pulling out. The outfitter misrepresented and failed to deliver on what was bargained for. Very understandable someone not wanting to continue any further at that point, bugling elk or not.

It seems like it’s different perspectives though for lots of users. An elk is an elk for me. I can find another one. Some of the responses make me think that some peoples experience is that elk are like unicorns, and when you find one, it’s magic that can’t be abandoned.

Anyway, I think you’re getting razzed harder than is justified, but that is the internet I suppose.

To the OP, you absolutely should have been upset. Leaving the hunt after so much personal expense seems odd to most of us that love to elk hunt. That said, you obviously were there more for the experience than to kill an elk. Nothing wrong with that and nothing wrong with demanding to receive what you are paying for.

I'm guessing in hindsight you will regret your decision. I personally would have either demanded the outfitter make it right by providing what you paid for going forward, or demanded the refund and then worked out a deal with the guide for the two of you to finish the hunt without the outfitter involved. I'm guessing he was out of work for that week anyways after you left.
