Simple question - would you buy a warranty on a used truck purchase? As I mentioned in another thread, I recently purchased a 2017 F150 XLT 2.7, 6 speed 4x4 with 62,000 miles on it for my son. Super clean vehicle with a clean Carfax and one owner. Had a mechanic look it over before he purchased it, and the only thing he mentioned was it may be a good idea for preventative fluid changes and sparkplugs at 100k.

I have the ability to buy an extended warranty through the local ford dealer, their ford platinum warranty, which would cover four years or 48,000 miles and it’s like $4200. Do you think it would be worth it?

Part of the reason I bought a 17 with the 2.7 and the six speed was that seemed to be the most reliable combo on used Fords and I’m not sure if the warranty is really worth it.

You might try pricing it with Granger Ford or Ziegler Ford online...both offer the factory Ford warranties much cheaper than local dealers usually.

I wouldn't buy under the terms you mentioned. By way of comparison, an 8 yr., 85,000 mile warranty through Ram on my diesel cost me about 2/3 of what your quote is.

Depend on what actually covered. I’ve done it n the past and found that nothing I’ve need to replace is covered. I’d rather save the extra money and repair it myself. And/or start up a mechanical insurance policy. Works for my brother and his truck.

If you can afford to fix it out of pocket then warranties aren't worth it imo. If you can't afford to fix out of pocket if something happens then possibly. Odds are that insurance Co will come out ahead. You also have all the fine print in the policy. Nothing like paying for insurance only to find out it won't actually cover something when you go to use it or having to fight with them about what is covered or how much you're reimbursed.

Dealership tech here.

Deal with these aftermarket warranty companies a lot. They can be a huge PITA to get approval on repairs. Typically the repair you’ll need is a more expensive one like cam chains, cam phasers, timing cover reseal, rear main seal, etc. If you have any aftermarket parts like lift kit, wheels, etc. some won’t cover suspension failures or anything that can be related to a lift. Also depends on how persistent the service writer handling the communication to the warranty company. Some of those people at the warranty companies are assholes and won’t approve stuff and others approve them nearly instantly. Little luck of the draw on them. Read the fine print on your contract and research the common expensive failures on the vehicle you have and see if it falls within their supported repairs.

The truck seems solid (knock on wood)...really think I am going to forgo the warranty purchase. It would really suck, but we do have means to cover a 2-3k fix if it was to come up.

If you reach out to your bank, their usually have a warranty they reccomend and offer through their loan officer. Mine got me in touch with route 66 warranties and I got work done under it. Very much worth it.
